I just added up what it would cost to duplicate my 1500 pt. mechanized army using cheap plastic Cadians. The total is $713.95. In reality, since I collect old 2nd-Ed metal Tallarn minis, the real cost is at least 4-5x that, even with eBay.

In fact, each Tallarn Chimera squad with meltas costs me about $120.00 retail from the GW site.

Nice article. As I've built my IG force, I've been very careful to buy used, buy cheap, etc, and even then the expense is more than I had expected. Still, it's great to be finally building the army I've wanted for a decade and a half. Your questions…
1)Buy used, and trade for bits. As was mentioned, the relatively unchanging line has made for a huge 2nd hand market.
2)Perhaps not the most expensive, but very nearly so. Certainly the most expensive of the armies with updated codicies.
3)I hope not to see an IG megaforce. It would just make folks sadder when they see how few points their $ buys, and the variation of IG forces is one of the things I like best about it.

I totally agree with what you are saying. I think going second hand is the best way to get an IG force on the cheap. Otherwise the purpose of this is to show what you should buy if you are going to support a local store or just getting into the hobby.

ok that last part did make to much sense. My point was that their is no problems with buying stuff second hand with these army's or coming up with (cheap) alternatives based on a some wreak you can pick up on ebay. Also if your not planning on going to any GW sponsored events then their are a multitude of other ranges that fit IG pretty well. Or if you want it legit then some of the fantasy stuff works quite well with a bit of effort (chaos marauders and empire flagellants are top favorites both of which are cheaper models ). Any way it would be better than have the same three poses repeated 11 times!!

the one real save grace and at the same time major disappointment is that at present ,apart form the hell hound they have nothing really you could call a new kits. Most of their range has been around for years if not decades in it current form (ok some of the tanks got a bit tweaked but it was really nothing to write home about, and most people wouldn't even notice the differences between the old and new on table). Add in that a lot of the new codex entry haven't got models without going FW give you a pretty free hand to scatch/ convert these up and ebay really is your friend.

You can always convert hellhounds and other IG vehicles from Chimera hulls. The pegasus brand chemical plant set is a good way to get bits for that purpose.

I don't think IG are the most expensive army, I think witch hunters are.
A sisters army can pack in over 100 models at 1500-1750 points. Considering that the default box of sisters is almost 50 bucks, and it doesn't include the specialist troopers most squads need to be outfitted with, a competitive sisters squad runs about 100 dollars after tax. Worse, most witch hunters stuff isn't available in stores/online distributors, so you will end up paying full price unless you buy used.
Still worse, the above figures take into account a 10 man sisters squad, a full squad is 20.
