I played in Ard Boyz because I'm a tournament whore. If there's a tournament within 2hrs driving distance and I'm not working….I am there! I brought Space Wolves because I expected 100 IG Mech lists to be there. There wasn't one in the pack. I played Darkwynn the first round and he won, by a massacre. My next 2 games I got max points and ended up in fourth. So, first last place for me. All 3 games were a blast, no douchiness was present……unless you count Nick's Goatboy list.LOL.

Nothing wrong with being a whore =) I would blame Thomas more than Nick.

From what I heard, attendance was down across our two local stores. I didn't go myself and a few people asked me, “How was it? Oh, you didn't go either?”

Attendance was down but, it was more fun than last year.

Ah, it was fine. I had a pretty douchey list myself.

I played in it to challenge myself, and, like crazyredpraetorian, I'm a tourney whore.
I did end up winning the tourney @ my location, and it was nice to have my theories in regards to s3 vindicated: IE, that the scale wouldn't matter, as most of the people on top tables would be mech anyway, and thus they would have similar Kill Point totals.

I also did not encounter any douches. I played three great players.

Reasons I played…
It was free Local Full of people I know Able to field my unpainted BA with no regard Possibility for free loot (though really a day of work earns more than a day of 40k does even winning)
Now is it possible for round two to be full of fun people too? Last fall with fantasy, I had one player nearly ruin my chances at placing and fun for the whole day by slow playing me to a draw. Hopefully I don't run into this for round 2 40k.

Funny, my round 3 had my opponent reserve all his tanks as I only had two units of jump and 1 hq to his 7 vehicles and 2 hq. Very different than your experience.

It was not till a friend of mine last night reminded me that Ard Boyz is FREE! I mean what event do you get a chance to win 60 bucks worth of stuff in first round without paying an entrence fee.

My reasons for playing Ard Boyz? Pretty much for the same reasons as others here.
1. At my local gamestore. Shameless plug for Endgame in Oakland, CA. 2. Since it was at my local gamestore, regular 40k play was shut down for the day anyway. 3. Tons of my friends also played, so the odds of running into a douchebag are minimal. 4. Got in three games in one day (Usually only get in one or two on a saturday. 5. It was free. 6. I won forty bucks worth of stuff.
In the end, I took second, brought home a box of Vespids, and had three fun games. And thus I end Ard Boyz this year on a high note, as I won't be going to round 2.

This 'Ard Boyz recently was actually the second tournament I've ever played in so I figured I should go because I've really got no substantial position on any tournament yet. But to summarize what happened, I took my Blood Angels with my two home made Storm Ravens and had a pretty good time.
My first game was against a Grey Knight player who got more or less tabled but he whined the entire game about how old his codex was so I figured he had it coming. Second was against some vanilla Space Marines which killed my 2 Storm Ravens in the first turn when he seized the initiative. Fortunately, I still came out okay and ended up killing every single unit he had on the field by turn 5. And then it was me and the number one guy who played a demons list with Epidimius. Needless to say, Scenario 3 had me by the balls from the get go so I spent the first two turns in reserve and the last 3 trying to do hit and run but still to no avail.
I had a really good time though in retrospect, got third place, but won't be able to play in the second round due to military. While I think 2500 is about 500 points above my comfort range, it still made for some interesting lists. I didn't see anything that I think most people would consider a really, really cheap list. If not for the parameters of Scenario 3, I'd like think I'd had a chance against the demons.

I think the first round is your best bet at fun for sure. have any pics of those Stromravens? I wonder what that Grey Knight player was thinking….

I did well, won the first round in The Woodlands TX with my Ork hybrid list (part foott shloggers part speed freaks.
However, I completely agree with your assessment that this point range dums down list building. people dont have to pick and choose any more they can just take everything. What i believe that this point level achieves is finding the best player because if everyone can take whatever they want then you have to be on your toes at all times to be able to win.
