Being in two rock bands, holding down a job in the healthcare industry, planning for a wedding, and trying to fit in time for gaming can be rough. Let alone finding time to update a blog.
My apologies for not updating lately. August has proven to be a very busy time of the year. I have at least 4 friends getting married soon and lots of little things to get done along the way.
I did manage to play some 40K and got 5th place at Ard Boyz last Saturday. The scoring is very odd in these tourneys. I only had one minor loss all day and it was against the 1st place player in round 3. Playing at the top table was fun. But the Guard player I beat in round 2 took 3rd place. Good dude though. Just kind of funny how that’s tabulated.
I went into ‘Ard Boyz knowing I couldn’t play in the semi’s anyway. I have a show in KC at Nehemiah Festival that day. So, it was all in good fun from the start. I played two guard players and a Vulkan list at the end.
I used a land raider heavy BA list with Mephiston and a lot of Assault Marines.
Very fun and very effective.
In fact, the last game was almost a tie by 100 victory points. So it was a pretty fun and close game.
I did something all Tournament I had never done before.
I kept Mephiston alive in ALL 3 GAMES. And in two of them he only had one wound left. It was insane.
It wasn’t like I was holding him back either. I was using him as a wrecking ball. He is the reason I killed the traitor in round one. And he is the one who smashed Vulkan into glass in round 3.
I was having good luck with him.
In round 3 my opponent was Dan from the Outlanders. Really nice guy and fun to play. I had a blast in all my games. But round 3 was a relief to not be playing guard for the third time.
And anyone who says playing Alpha Strike Guard with BA and winning is easy is WRONG! I lost two land raiders top of turn one in my first game to Scout moving Vets. And lost one and immobilized another in my second game. It took a LOT of maneuvering after the first couple of turns to stay in the game.
But that’s how the guard is. If you can survive the first two turns you can probably put on the hurt.
My dice were the usual. Rolling 1s and 2s like it was their job. I didn’t win initiative all day. But that’s the norm for me. I think I have maybe won initiative twice in my life. It’s pretty funny.
Despite all of the odds stacked against me I was very happy with my results. It was a blast and I look forward to ‘Ard Boyz next year.
I have also been working on our gaming group’s Armageddon Campaign. We are playing a 7 week campaign in September that will follow the story of Armageddon. I just finished Helsreach and it has really got me pumped for this campaign too.
After reading Helsreach I am fully convinced that Bowden is the BEST BL author there is. The guy wrote a really great story with some great characters.
I’m currently reading The Purging of Kadillus and Gav Thorpe seems like an infant compared to Aaron Dembski-Bowden. His characters are mere shells of the detail and personality that Bowden pours into his novels.
I’m hoping I can power through Kadillus and make it to the next book on my list. Which will be a toss up between the Hunt for Voldurus and Thousand Sons.
I’m thinking I will let you guys pick. Which one should I read next?
