American just love to assign numbers to things, from top ten lists to batting averages we are a numerological nation. So it should not be any surprise that American 40k players love numbers, like Roman Polaski loves underage girls. We also love to use those numbers to give value to things, so why not assign a number value to 40k units or armies? I was delighted to discover recently…

clicking on everyone’s favorite 40k banner ad that Jawaballs enjoys the numbers just as much as he loves selling his great painting services. OneĀ  post stood out to me. It was one of those topics where you think, damn it I should have come up with that first.

The post titled: “The 40k Army Rating Project

Describes a method by which to rate any 40k army. While it does have a competitive application, I see its potential as a tool, to give new players a way to think about an army before they buy it. The system Jawaballs presents is by no means perfect and is a work in progress, but it is a great start. My suggestions would be to use a 1-10 scale not a 1-20 scale, also perhaps add more categories.

Questions to comment on:

  1. How would you rate your army of choice using Jawaballs method?
  2. What changes would you make to the rating system?
  3. Is an entire army to broad to catagorize, where an army list might be better?
