Well we are officially over a month into 6th edition and it is about time that we get some tournaments running the new rules. This weekend (Aug 4-5th) 6th will get its first big test. It is the Golden Throne Grand Tournament held in my own backyard, in lovely San Jose California. The event is in its first year and has grand plans. The ambitious goal set by the organizers is 200 players, but with the West Coast events notorious for failing to draw, the actually number of players that will show up is unknown. My guess they will get close to 100 players, with the Crystal Brush Qualifier Paint Competition helping to increase attendance.

What most people are interested in though is in how 6th edition will play out. The Golden Throne amazingly is going all in. They will have almost everything; with only random missions and alternating terrain placement out. My humble prediction is this will be one of the only events to play so close to rules as written you will see for the entire lifespan of 6th. My hope is the full embrace of 6th will be a wild success, but my fear is with new rules players will get annoyed and frustrated, and take it out on 6th edition, when it is their own naivety that is the problem.

Either way this will be a great testing ground for how the meta has changed and what new trends will start. I plan on attending and will look at deciphering  some key questions.

  • How much time does it take players to get through games?
  • How many rock/paper/scissors match ups happen?
  • What effect does Warlord powers, mysterious terrain, and fortifications have on the game?
  • What missions seem to produce the most angst and why?
  • What type of armies do people think are the best in the new edition?

I am sure more will come up as the two-day event wears on. I will also try to take pictures and get impressions from the many participants at the event. I know all of Team Zero Comp will be at the event and I am sure they will also be taking notes for their own events– like the Bay Area Open.

If you are interested in learning more about the Golden Throne GT head on over to their website for more details.

There are still tickets and space for those that wish to attend. I should mention that the prize support is pretty insane!
