BoK Reviews: White Dwarf Issue #104

White Dwarf Issue #104: Heroes of the Fyreslayers

White Dwarf reviews operate differently than other Blood of Kittens Reviews. The goal with these reviews is to place a value for each issue. The rating system is one to four stars, each star represents $1 in value, to a max of four dollars. The review values are also Warhammer 40k based; Age of Sigmar dedicated issues will still be reviewed, but valued for Warhammer 40k players. It means you could see many low valued issues, with a general Games Workshop hobbyist actually valuing them more. Keep this in mind when deciding if a particular White Dwarf Issue is good for you.

Contents: New Releases

It looks like it is the end of the road for the Dwarves with the release of the Grimwrath Berzerker and the Battlesmith. These characters look pretty good compared to the much panned other Fyreslayer releases. In addition GW is also releasing the Grand Alliance: Chaos book which takes all the Chaos forces putting them in into one book, it is pretty reasonable price for what is mostly free online. Black Library is also releasing a short story collection from the Horus Heresy with some terrible cover art. The best new release comes from Forge World with the previous leaked Raven Guard Dark Fury Assault Squad and Corvus Corax Primarch models. The Primarch isn’t one of the best, but the Dark Furies do look pretty killer.

Contents: Legion of Blood

White Dwarf continues to waste pages with another promotion of the New Year, New Army releases. This time it is Khorne with one of the best box sets because you are not stuck with extra HQs if you buy multiple copies.

Contents: Paint Splatter

We get more of the same, on how to paint the Grimwrath Berzerker, which is exactly the same way you paint any of the new Dwarves, which was detailed in previous White Dwarf from January.

What is GW saying?

Released Jan. 23th 2016

We take a look at starting a Daemons of Khorne collection in Legion of Blood and look at a stunning Seraphon army (an upcoming Army of the Month, no less) in Children of the Stars. All that, plus the latest from Black Library and Forge World, and still yet more in The Week in White Dwarf. Check it out now!

Contents: Children of the Stars

We actually get some decent content with a amazing showcase of Amy Snuggs’s beautiful Lizardman army. The bright grey skin with contrasting orange highlighst really makes this army shine. It is really difficult to take a often drab color like grey  and create layered depth. Most of the look was done with gently Drybrushing over and over. Here is an example of her work. File_002

Contents: Warscrolls

White Dwarf gives us some free rules for the Grimwrath Berzerker and Battlesmith.

Contents: The Week In

The week in weak information actually has some useful info, with a cool way to use Agrellan Earth on bases and a tip for painting Khorne Daemons.

Next Issue Hint: Slaves to Darkness, and the Balance of Power Shifts Once More.

Final Verdict

Issue #104 more Dwarves more Sigmar, the current 40k drought can’t end soon enough. At least this issue had some interesting extras like Forgeworld and a great looking Lizardman army.
