Meat for Meta: Moving Forward for 40k

End Times for 40k isn’t Quite Possible

Warning

Meat for Meta is rated editorial nonsense. These articles are meant to complain about some group, somewhere, that is playing the game for all the wrong reasons or simply to just make fun of 40k nerd rage.

As the hints grow, so will the paranoia of the possible Age Sigmarification of Warhammer 40k. The hints seem to be all around us, and none more more telling than the actual use of the dreaded words “End Times” in the upcoming Warhammer 40k campaign Warzone: Fenris. Does this hint mean a future of pointless randomness or something actually good for the universe?

Let us look at how we got to today, because even before Age of Sigmar, the Leviathan campaign set the tone for coming battle between the Blood Angels and Tyranids for the 1st founding planet of Baal. Like the Golden Throne not working to Harlequins sensing there’s still hope an Eldar god lives. All this under the ever repeated statement that Games Workshop is keeping the clock just before midnight for the 40k universe.

The paranoid will take these all the omens as proof for the day GW brings the hammer and restarts the game is closer than ever. I  have faith this won’t be the case, it is instead GW listening to the players. I can remember the fluffy players only a few years ago complaining about no narratives or campaigns coming from GW, now we will four in the last 24 months, GW listened.

Today, GW is listening again, they are moving things forward. We just had a Tau character with a model get killed, we just had a Space Marine one elevated to a higher rank. Who knows what the Fenris Warzone will bring, but don’t be so surprised if some other character gets gaked. Sure, we still have Abbadon always inches away from Terra, and I don’t think that is going to change, but at least GW isn’t afraid to mix things up that affect established characters. If it means rule changes for characters like Shrike all the better, hey remember Eldrad is suppose to be dead, but that doesn’t stop GW from putting him the codex.

What about this whole End Times mention in the yet to be released White Dwarf? It could just be hyperbole from White Dwarf staff writers, we won’t know exactly what it means until we get the new campaign books. What is also going under the radar is GW supporting new models with content, it use to be we got a new or updated unit and that was it. Now, we get a whole campaign to go along with the release, just like the new Bloodthirster and Tau suits before.

It is these unheralded details GW doesn’t get credit for, but make both marketing and game play sense. The only problem is it is obvious models dictate what is released next. The newest Space Wolf codex is less than two years old, so releasing an update this quick does really anger many players who have been waiting much longer for their (Chaos Space Marines) army to get updated. If it wasn’t for the new Wulfen I doubt an accompanying campaign would have been created. At least it looks like GW might take this opportunity to help out Daemons and Grey Knights with some extra rules.

It is just prudent, we don’t get caught up in what might happen, because knowing GW we won’t know 40k is blown up until just a few weeks before it happens, so there is no reason to lose sleep, unless of course you are a Ebay reseller…
