BoK Reviews: White Dwarf Issue #109

White Dwarf Issue #108: Deathwatch Overkill!

White Dwarf reviews operate differently than other Blood of Kittens Reviews. The goal with these reviews is to place a value for each issue. The rating system is one to four stars, each star represents $1 in value, to a max of four dollars. The review values are also Warhammer 40k based; Age of Sigmar dedicated issues will still be reviewed, but valued for Warhammer 40k players. It means you could see many low valued issues, with a general Games Workshop hobbyist actually valuing them more. Keep this in mind when deciding if a particular White Dwarf Issue is good for you.

Contents: New Releases

After about a year of speculation Deathwatch and the Genestealer Cult have arrived. This is one of the most hotly anticipated releases for GW in years. As nostalgia sweeps across hobbyists everywhere this new release is garnering almost complete universe acclaim. Deathwatch Overkill is a boxed game with 50 models priced at $165. This White Dwarf devotes all, but three pages to the product. It is an advertisement, but one in which you get free rules for all of the models shown for use in any 40k game. The dedication to this product is well beyond what we saw with the Betrayal of Calth issues and this White Dwarf is pulls out all stops to promote Overkill. The only other releases this week, are for the March issue of Visions and two Black Library novels for Deathwatch.

Contents: Paint Splatter

After 20 pages of Overkill images, we get a two page spread detailing how to paint the Cassius model. We get some cool formulas for painting Black and Silver armour.

What is GW saying?

Contents: Operation Killstorm

Like in the Calth issues we get an overview of how the boxed Overkill game works. The mission presented is simple, showing the basics of the game and only uses few of the models. You get an idea of the turn sequence, which is similar to Calth with a you go I go mechanic.

Contents: The Rules

As mentioned before the real value for this issue is the 8 page pull out of rules for the Deathwatch models for use in regular 40k games. You get rules for each team member along with a few formations.

While GW doesn’t waste pages on the usual useless drek, the great guys at WarhammerTV have put up a great walk through for the game found inside Deathwatch Overkill!

Next Issue Hint: The Alien Infiltration Continues…

Final Verdict

Issue #109 is all about the Overkill and that isn’t a problem, this is one large advertisement for the box game, but you get actually content in the form of 40k rules for the entire Deathwatch Team making it close to a must buy.
