BoK Reviews: White Dwarf Issue #118

White Dwarf Issue #118: Airborne Onslaught

White Dwarf reviews operate differently than other Blood of Kittens Reviews. The goal with these reviews is to place a value for each issue. The rating system is one to four stars, each star represents $1 in value, to a max of four dollars. The review values are also Warhammer 40k based; Age of Sigmar dedicated issues will still be reviewed, but valued for Warhammer 40k players. It means you could see many low valued issues, where a general Games Workshop hobbyist actually valuing them more. Keep this in mind when deciding if a particular White Dwarf Issue is good for you.

Contents: New Releases

We have officially entered the reboxing phase for GW releases, but instead of repacking something without anything more, we get new configurations for existing kits. This is an artful way of giving players more toys from a single box, but more importantly it means GW can raise the price of an older products. The Stormhawk Interceptor and Wazbom Blastajet are new flyers for 40k, packaged with the Stormtalon and Dakkajet kits. The new flyers though are not the centerpiece of this release as we get the 7th edition update to Death from the Skies supplement, the new book has new flyer rules and deeper optional dog fighting rules for 40k. The book also has new missions and a ton of fun content. Black Library releases the a new series exploring the non-Heresy histories of the Primarchs starting with Gulliman. We also get an anthology the Silent War and reissue graphic novel Deff Skwadron. Citadel has is releasing a groovy set of Ork dice with bone and green coloring. White Dwarf also pimps the new Battlefleet Gothic: Armada video game. Finally, Forge World has new shoulder pads bits for Cataphractii Terminators.

Contents: Burning Skies

Here are some pages dedicated to the new flyer and dog fighting rules. Sadly, this section does nothing as the actual rules are tied to a childish narrative a 10 year old wouldn’t care about. What full rules you do find are regulated to sad little sidebars.

What is GW saying?

Released April, 30th 2016

Terror swoops from the skies of the dark future this week as the Stormhawk Interceptor and Wazbom Blastajet arrive to reinforce Space Marines and Orks everywhere! We take a close look at these new flyers in White Dwarf 118 and put them through their paces in a dogfight report using the new rules from the new Death from the Skies supplement for Warhammer 40,000. There’s also an Ultramarines Stormhawk Interceptor painting guide, a glorious Salamanders Army of the Month which has to be seen to be believed, and much more besides!

Contents: Paint Splatter

This Paint Splatter shows us nothing new as the Stormhawk is detailed, using the basic Ultramarine paint scheme we all have seen before.

Contents: The Nocturne Fireborn

Here we get a little preview of the Warhammer: Visions Army of the Month. The artist behind the models is Jason Lee and his Salamander Space Marine collection. The airbrushing is really well done and makes for a very crisp look, but most of the models in the preview lack much depth beyond traditional highlighting.

Contents: The Week In

More Death from the Skies info with actual info about what you can find in the book, with details on the new fly rules along with attack patterns!

Next Issue Hint: Flesh, Tasty Flesh. Raw Flesh. Dead Flesh. All Will Be Consumed.

Final Verdict

Issue #118 falls pretty flat as GW goes extra salesman adding no useful content you can use. They didn’t even give us the rules for the new Flyers!
