Space Wolf FAQ thoughts and "The Elect" army update

Space Wolf FAQ

The Space Wolves FAQ is finally here, and it’s about bloody time.

This is an idiosyncratic document reflecting a personal vision and understanding of the rule. Using our hindsight goggles, many of the Space wolf faq answers could only be derived from a RAI perspective. Of course, this is a problem as it proves the point that GW rules are unclear as written. It also means that applying strict RAW and only RAW to a tabletop game doesn’t work.

Some subjectivity is necessarily involved in interpreting game rules. We must use common sense in addition to literal readings.

Overall I am very happy with the clarifications, they seem to be well justified for the most part. Now that the rules are more clear, I can actually play these guys without worrying about a rules argument being inevitable.

“The Elect” Background fluff:

The Elect are a warband of Thousand Sons spared the rubric of Ahriman due to being in the warp at the time of the ritual. They are still mutating and honor it as a true sign of Change. They have made pacts with many Tzeentchian daemons including some greater discs.  They believe themselves to be in secret communication with their Primarch Magnus, and act on his cryptic instructions, divined through rituals.

List revisions:

This is a Tzeencth army using the Space Wolf codex.

Since Jaws works the way I thought it would and Canis can take 2 hounds and still join units, I can field those units without worry of rules conflicts. To save points I stripped down one of my predators and got rid of a unit of fenrisian wolves. Since this particular list os only 1850, I am keeping it to 3 units of scoring grey hunters even though I have enough models to field more.

Cityfight bases and progress on "The Elect" of Tzeentch

Bases!

Here’s a bunch of cityfight bases I made, for my Tzeenctch Wolves and my actual Space Wolves.  I  used corkboard, textured plasticard, aquarium gravel, sand, mesh, and bits from Pegasus terrain kits. I used tacky glue, white glue, and occasional superglue, and cut up the cork with a razor blade and plastic cutters.

Progress on “The Elect” of Tzeentch…

(They are a “counts as” Space Wolves force)

I have all the infantry painted up and ready for play, and some are finished to a pretty advanced state. The Chaos Spawn are now on painted disc of Tzeencth bases, for my Thunderwolf cavalry.  I am going to use mutants after all, representing blood claws. I am now going through and detailing models a few at a time. I still need to paint the wolves and about three vehicles.

I am working on more background material for the force, and I’ll publish something within a month.

Here’s my latest army list revision, I felt like I needed some cheap troops and more wolves.  Dropping a land speeder hurt but it was the onlky way to make room for more wounds in the army.

Tzeentch Wolves progress

CSM_Sorcerer_Terminator

Flipping through Codex: Chaos Space Marines I took a closer look at the color scheme for The Scourged.  To my dismay I noticed that their heads, shoulderpads, gauntlets and feet were black with red highlights.  While I like the idea that they hear all lies spoken by man and are driven insane, I’m simply not going to go with that scheme.

I will play my force as Thousand Sons who escaped the rubric of Ahriman while traveling through the warp.  They honor mutation as the ultimate form of physical change, and have vowed to hunt down Ahriman for his crime against the legion. I really can’t see a “fluff” based objection that holds up, since the warp allows for time travel and such it makes sense that some warbands were not affected by the ritual that turned them into automatons.  Besides, Tzeencth is the master of intrigue and I like the idea that his followers plot against one another.

I still need a name for this merry band and for the characters.

I’ve been pretty focused on cranking out models for this force.  The chaos marines (grey hunters) are almost all at least basecoated, and many are approaching a finished state. The possessed (wulfen) are looking mighty tasty. I have a rhino and predator done to a high standard, and another rhino and vindicator ready for highlights and details. Right now I am going to get started on the hulls for the second predator and the razorback.

The Thunderwolf cavalry will be chaos spawn riding on ground based tentacle filled disks I have made out of airdry foam clay. I have one landspeeder tentacle beast almost done, although he needs a rider.

The chaos hounds (fenris wolves) are all assembled with detailed bases, although I still have some more clay work to do.

For Canis I am thinking of using my chaos lord model with jump pack and twin lightning claws, chained to something grotesque. I could use my wingless tzeentch daemon prince but he is not a GW model and Conquest NW might be picky about that.

I decided I needed 4 troops after all, and since I am out of rhinos I am going with Zach’s suggestion to use a drop pod. This will allow me another tactical choice and I can always put it down empty if I have to. I am thinking about scrapping the chooser of the slain and Canis’s wolf to upgrade it with a deathwind launcher, I will need it against hordes. For the model, I have some toy “dragon eggs” that are the perfect size and shape, I will be adding many tentacles and some machine parts to make it into a creepy hybrid. One egg looks biological and will be used for this army, the other one actually has battered metal plates bolted on it in places and looks like a perfect basis for an Ork walker or drop kan.

Here’s the latest list, as always it keeps changing. Tzeentch would be proud…

The Scourged: An army and art project taking shape

Here’s some hobby journal for ya.

The Seattle GT, Conquest NW ( http://conquestnw.avalongamecon.com/ ) is coming up. It has an expensive entry fee and the lists will be 2,000 points.  I’m not sure if I am going but if my crew from the Bay Area comes up I’ll have to go.  I don’t want to play against some of the hyper competitive douches that I know will attend, but I know the problem players are in the minority.

It’s time to figure out what to take. Even if I skip the GT there is a TSHFT for 1850 pts. coming up in march.  My Orks are tempting since they would be easy to finish painting but something else is calling to me. The Space Wolves codex is great! It is what the Chaos codex should have been. I am hard at work making a Tzeentch list using the SW ‘dex, focusing on calvary but otherwise balanced. It’s going to be fielded as The Scourged, tzeentch marines who hear every lie spoken by man, driving them mad. I am looking forward to all the proxy mutant conversions I can field. Stay tuned for an upcoming article featuring conversions of chaos hounds, and scenic basing.

For my HQ I am looking at Canis Wolfborn.  This is a calvary heavy list and I need a synergetic leader for that.   “Canis” will lead the hounds, I will probably have two units of fenris wolves, and one TW unit. I was originally going to go with a thunderwolf riding wolf lord or battle leader, but Canis is a bargain when compared to a calvary wolf lord.  The only problem is he has no invulnerable save, but a native toughness 5 helps which the wolflord can’t get. Rending STR5, I5 wolf claws and a bajillion attacks will hurt, especially if some of his wolf horde survives. Fenris Wolves get Ld 8 if he is close enough, and get leadership re-rolls if close to a thunderwolf calvary unit.  I will keep my calvary together so that even if a chunk is taken out some of it will should the enemy turn 2 or 3.

This is a Tzeentch list, so I need a sorceror. A Runepriest with Living Lightning and Jaws of the World Wolf fits the bill.  I like the 10 point pet he can get, but who knows if I can spare 10 points. I don’t have a solid plan for this fellow but he will most likely lead some grey hunters and provide fire support.

Yay, fast attack. There are so many juicy options here.  The fast attack sections of the new IG, SM and SW codexes make the Ork and Chaos books cry. I’m looking at two units of chaos hounds / fenris wolves (counting as troops but not scoring); one or two units of chaos spawn / TWC; and one or two “land speeeders” modeled as large discs of tzeencth with daemonic riders.  The hounds just need finishing touches on the sculpting, the spawn are finished but need larger bases, and the discs I have barely begun.

Troops will be a mixed bag, I definitely want some grey hunters in rhinos and a lascannon razorback. These will be great for basic objective holding units. They can threaten vehicles and wipe out lesser infantry. I have 2 rhinos to paint and one to build as a chaos razorback. My Word Bearers models were going to get the rhinos, but they will have to content themselves with their one rhino… and borrow from the world eaters if in desperate need. I have plenty of Scourged marines assembled and primered, and I added cityfight pieces to their bases.

I can’t decide if I am doing Blood claws in a land raider or not. I want to use my possessed models, I might just stick one unit in a rhino and call it a day. I don’t really have a spare land raider except for the one I was planning to paint as slaanesh. Stelek from YTTH claims you should do either 2 land raiders or none in a tournament setting. If I don’t take a LR I save a lot of points and two is out of the question.  It is neither sporting nor fluffy nor affordable, and I want to showcase my mutation conversions more so than vehicle mods.

I’ll probably take a vindicator and a dakka pred for heavy support, although I may throw in my lascannon fest pred as well, especially if I go without a landraider.

I really want a dread but I don’t have the points or the model really. It would be a fun conversion to do, especially if I do a bio-mech monstrosity.

My actual Space Wolves army will not be so radical, and I’ll field it closer to a vanilla marine force.  I try to avoid spending much money on my SW but I did get a nice new wolf pack box for my birthday. I am going to refurbish my models and get them in shape, using some new bits and paint touch-ups.  Those new SW terminators look so nice but at $10 a piece they are just too much, considering I have tons of old termies.

I also have Space Hulk to paint, and I still can’t decide between painting the terms as Blood Angels, Deathwing, or Space Wolves.  The genestealers are a quandry also, I am considering several paint schemes.  I could paint them bone with green details like my current models, paint them in the classic navy and purple, or do something crazy and high contrast.  We’ll see.

In other news the LATD codex is in progress.  I am transferring the data to In Design format which will enable me to make the whole document look extra snazzy, but it is taking time away from the updates.  I have a prototype cover image and plan to have some illustration and model photos in the final product.

Below is an update of the picture I posted a few months back.  Damn it is taking a long time.  I will darken the blues again but I don’t want the texturing and shading to get lost.
