I’m not sure how many people out there have been following the warseer thread on the new Tau codex… but I have. Sadly, Harry came out and his cautionary “tau aren’t coming out as soon as people think” is not a more official “not before 6th edition… and probably not this year).
Well… while I appreciate Harry’s information… it does not stop me from being a very very Sad Panda.
I’m likely looking at taking my Dark Eldar to the tournaments again this year, but I plan on painting and updating my Tau throughout the year, so expect a lot of painting pictures as I take my old tau, and get them all ready for the new edition, and their new codex (one day). Luckily, I have enough Tau to keep me busy all year. I’ve made some tau purchases (Did you know you can still get metal stealth suits from GW for $7.50?!?! and those are great models). So I picked up some conversion bits, a flying stand for my barracuda and some stealth suits. I’ll be turning to them once the necrons I’m working on for my buddy are painted. I’ll do a complete break down on all the necrons in the next week or so.
In other news, I took DE to a tournament last weekend and came in 2nd. Good little tournament at Little Wars in Baton Rouge. I had some great games against Grey Knights (Corteaz Henchmen), Black Templars (triple vindicator), and regular space marines (10 assault termies with Null Barrier and Gate). All great games and great opponents.

Just to note, plastic Stealth Suits are slightly less than $7.50 per model and you get a drone.
Yea, it’s not about them being cheaper then the plastic. I have a full squad of the plastic. It’s about the fact that they aren’t making any more and once the new tau book comes out, you won’t be able to get any of the metal XV 15′s anymore.
I, for one, do not mind waiting until after 6th for the Tau codex. The codexes that are “ready for” or “designed with the next edition in mind” usually fair poorly when the next edition does come out.
Honestly… neither do I. I wanted to take them to Wargames Con, but if they are out later, that means we get a full color hardback book with all the bells and whistles… and I am ok with that
I, for one, am totally happy about this. As rlye says, books released right before the end of an edition (Orks, CSM, DA) pretty much inevitably get screwed after the new edition comes out.
The fact that this comes from an actual reliable source is nice to see, also.
While I wanted to take them to austin this year, having them pushed back doesn’t bother me. I’m going to update the army I have for 6th edition and paint everything I have for the rest of the year. Gives me a chance to paint what I want, as opposed to just getting a new army out for a tournament!
What did you learn? Don’t trust every “leak” you see.
I’ve never trusted every leak. I’ve generally trusted when a bunch of people start reporting the same thing. I’ve never seen such a gut of “wrong rumors” as this… and I’ve been watching the rumor boards a long time.
I was interested in trying out the gaming part of the hobby, and tau are the army i’m most interested in by a pretty big margin. I want to keep my spending on the hobby light though (meaning I don’t want to have outdated models within a few years). I’ve painted models for a long time though, and spend a long, long time on each one, so I could start building now and still not be done by the time the new codex came out. Any guesses on units that would be safe to get without fear of having to get them replaced? (I like having the idea of having the newest models possible)
Anything in plastic you are pretty safe with. Firewarriors, Kroot, Devilfish, Hammerheads, Pirhana’s, stealth suits. skrays. Crisis suits are 50%/50%
Models you can be sure will be updated:
Pathfinders
Broadsides
Vespid
You could purchase ethereals in metal and be safe. In the alternative to the crisis suits, get some from forgeworld, they are ace.
I kinda figured all the leaked tau information and the 6th edition rumors were just that – rumors. Had my hopes up but i knew it wasn’t official yet or ever will.
I will not abandon the Tau – they’re my only army but they sure are in a serious need of updating even now for 5th edition. Even an FAQ Erratta or Codex PDF update – something to keep it fair against fast running assault oriented armies. Something to make a bridge until 6th edition’s official release.
I’ve still got my army, I certainly am not abandoning. Harry over at warseer says that the models are basically finished, it’s just the slot they are looking for. He expects them in Q1 of 2013. I’m going to finish painting all my marines, but I think around september of next year I’ll pull out all my stuff and update it for the new codex.
