Recently, I was able to go to a local tournament in Baton Rouge at Little Wars. This is the second tournament I have attended there, and I plan to go on the 21st of this month to get some great games in. They turn all of the entry money in as prize money for the players, have a solid amount of table, with good terrain. MOST importantly though they have a good group of guys that play there. I have enjoyed every single game that I have played, with each one being a pleasure.
I took my Tau a few months ago and came in third, then last month I took my standard Dark Eldar flying wytch kung fu kick army that I love so much and came in second (got beat out on VP’s… actually was 3-0). If a new army doesn’t come out again, I’ll probably be taking a variant of it back to Wargames Con this year. I’m also desperately trying to get into the Kalm Before the Waaagh in Huntsville. Open Bar… at the tournament?! Count me in. I’ve been trying to get a slot for my friends and I for years, but they open and shut faster then Adepticon because all of the previous year’s people are automatically back in. Anyway, let’s get back on topic. So at the last tournament, first round I pull grey knights from a great player that is on the area’s ATC team (forgive me, I don’t know their team name at the moment). At any rate he was running the psyfilemen dread, corteaz army with DCA’s all over the place, purifiers, land raider, GK librarian (shrouding). I don’t have the build, but I have read a lot about it, but not played it. I’ve been having a complex in my own mind against DCA’s because… I think for 15 pts their are broken… but that’s another argument.
But suffice it say I got to go toe to toe with bondage girl on bondage girl with knife action several times during the game.
Here is what I learned… wytches really have no reason to care about DCA’s. Now… I’m not talking about that Rad/Psycotrope/hammerhand/quicksilver assault, of course you need to watch out for that.
I also have a signifcant number of liquifier guns in my army now, and you drop a few flamer templates on those girls, and they go up in flames.
So here is what you do, just load out next to the girls, in cover, and shoot them with your splinter pistols. What are they going to do? They don’t have any guns, so their only choice is to assault (because they think they are awesome). Let them, they don’t have grenades, and you go choppy choppy on them and they don’t get any bonus attacks for assaulting (defensive grenades).
Also, most armys have about 15-20 DCA’s in the entire army… I have 30 wytches. A DCA and a Wytch are about equal in HTH with each other (4+ Invulnerable vs. 5+). The DCA’s hit a bit more, and can have one more attack, but wytches are cheaper and more plentiful. Also, wytches are far more emuverable. They come all in either open tropped assault transports and they have fleet. DCA’s don’t have either. Take some homunculi with liquiver guns, blow their transports up, and then drop the flamer/pistols on them. If you have to assault, go ahead, but if there is no other shooting threat, just laugh at them from two inches away. Shattershard works pretty well too.
One other think I learned that I didn’t know before hand. Wytches are amazing at tearing down walkers, but you get in HTH with a venerable dreadnought with extra armor, and that combat is no fun at all. I’m used to stunning or imoblizing a vehicle, then tearing it down in hth with the 4+ grenade hits. I pinned that dread down all game, but I lost the unit.
I’ve also had a thought recently… and I’m not sure it’s a good one. Let’s say you are looking accross at a army with 3x psyflemen, and they all have a 3+ cover save, they are bulked up behind rhino’s. Could you take three emty raiders with shockbrows and just ram the hell out of them going 30+ inches. Hit them a auto str 10 hit, and hope for the best? If you have a flickerfield, you may just survive anyway. I don’t advise doing this with troops inside however…. although if you have the guts to ram three of them full of models and you are feeling lucky, that game is going into a dramaticly different direction. I was just thinking about the tachiyon arrow, it’s a 30 pt, one shot str 10, ap 1 missile. Well… for 70 pts I can get a str 10 range 2d6+24 that automatically hits.




How do you run your 30 wytches? 3×10 or 2×15 or what? Lemme know pls.
Well, me and a friend both run two armies, both of which run a lot of wytches, but in completely differenent ways.
He runs his on foot through a portal, 15 man strong.
I run 9 man, Heckatrix, Venom Blade, Phantasm Grenade launcher, unit has a hydra guauntlets and haywire greandes. I also always stick a homunculi with them to get them FNP (so they don’t care when their raider blows up). I’ve started giving him a liquifer gun recently. So I guess it’s more like 27 wytches in my list, all in raiders, all with FNP to start, backed up by a unit of incubi. If you look at my wargmes con lis, I haven’t changed them much since then.
I have a concept list that I have been thinking about for a couple days and it relies entirely upon wyches. So 6 x 15 wych units with Hekatrix w/ grenades (haywire and phantasm) is approximately 1200 pts. Add a large beast masters unit with 4 beast masters and 20 khymeras is approx 1500 pts leaving 500pts of customization ( i was thinking 6 heamoculi, one for each unit for FNP). Deployment and tactics are:
Deploy the Khymera in front, a long front, giving a cover save to the wyches and just walk/fleet towards your enemy, it’s at least 110 models that can take or bog down anything in CC and most opponents won’t be able to kill enough of them on the way in. It’s just a concept…what do you think?
I had the pleasure of fighting Wyches last weekend. The DE opponent charged my 2 units of Battle Sister’s in a ruins with an Archon, 5 incubi, and a 10 man wyche unit. Both my sister units held but took 5 and 6 casualties each. Due to Kyrinov being within 6 inches, they were fearless and held. In my turn I assaulted him, no need for grenades due to them being locked, and began munching DE. Tied combat, after making some 6++ and several 3++ storm shield save. DE lost combat in his next turn and ran. All he had left was the archon and 1 incubi. I followed him with Kyrinov untouched, and 4 DCA, and 1 crusader left. Was an awesome combat to behold and very fun to watch. So many close rolls with it going either way!
Too bad a Flickerfield save will NOT help you when you ram. You might want to check the FAQ.
yes it can. The FAQ says it can’t be made against immobilization from dangerous terrain, and only from glancing or penetrating hits. A ram against me will produce a glancing or penetrating hit. You can definitely flickerfield it.

After Ard boyz I started taking shock prows on my raiders too. Stupid Nick and his Blessed Hulled LR’s! Nothing beats a lawn dart ruining someone’s vehicle and it surviving though!!
