Greetings fellow wargamers! So whenever a codex is re-released, the first thing most of the world notices is the ways units get worse. The chorus of woes is deafening at times. Bur rather than lament the changes to our favorite cult troops, obliterators, and the like, why don't we take a moment to celebrate the models that actually got better! Among them are my favorites, Chaos Spawn!
Spawn are beasts now, so they are FAST, like move 12" and fleet when they charge (for an average charge range of about 8"). That's a 20" threat range, on average! They're fearless, cause fear (which is amazing!), 3 wounds, S and T 5, Rage, random attacks (for an average of 5-6 attacks each on the charge!). Their spontaneous mutation ability is nothing but good each assault phase, you can take them in packs and they're only 30 points each! You can even give them Chaos Marks (T6 anyone, yes please!)
Spawn do have two major downsides. Firstly, they have NO armor save. The one exception to this comes in the form of a 1 in 3 chance of gaining 4+ armor in close combat, but that does you little to no good during shooting. They do have very bulky, so you can stow them in transports for a little extra protection.
They're second an arguably biggest drawback is price. Not points but actual COST. These guys run about $21 bucks each! Yikes! That's a lot of dough for 30 points on the table. For me the answer to this was fairly simple . . . conversion, conversion, conversion!
Like many good models, I went for a simple approach. GW makes tons of great figures that fit on 40mm bases . . . ogres, trolls, minotaurs, and Crypt Horrors! These ghoulish fiends are perfect for spawn, IMHO. They have a wonderful tank zombie or abomination feel to them!
To help distinguish them from the true Crypt Horrors, just kit bash them up a bit! Head over to your favorite bits vendor, Spikey Bits, and just take a stroll through his bits garden. In this case we used actual spare spawn heads, but I'm sure just about any 40mm figure would do. We did swap out one of the horrors hands for a replacement claw. In this case, the hand in question was holding a bit of broken tomb slab, and I just didn't feel it fit with the theme of the conversions. Fortunately I had plenty of spares, and this spawn claw hand worked perfectly.
I feel confident that other models, like minotaurs for Khorne Spawn, and Rat Ogres or Kroxigors or the like could be devised for lots of different spawn figures. We encourage this sort of conversion opportunity all the time. For just a little more than the price of two spawn, we managed to build three, plus we had tons of spares left over from the same kit, including four sets of wings!
Guess what we use those for? Find out here!
