Wow, what a weekend! It started off choppy but ended great!
Change is coming to Warhammer 40k and boy is it sexy.
Before we get to all "those" gory details let us start at the beginning.
The BAO was great, but far from flawless, there were some major problems on Day 1 of the championships. It all started with gates to the fairgrounds being closed. Then starting our first game least 1 hour 30 minutes late, with most people arriving at 9:00 that morning. This was due to major computer problems and a registration nightmare. With four games to be played it meant not ending till around 10:30 that night.
Making matters worse was the venue being too damn small.
Many players were forced to bump booties throughout the weekend by being so packed in.
Thank the weather gods it wasn't hot!
Then there was some stories of douche players. Someone punched a hole in the wall because a model broke. Then there was the kid that threw tantrums swearing at opponents when he lost. The worst though was some players trying to get results changed after the fact. Frontline Gaming did there best, providing free beer and such to many of the players. It was also good to hear that this will be the last time at the Antioch Fairgrounds. Amazingly, only 12 people dropped after Day 1!
As for myself Day 1 I went 2-2. Day 2 I woke up late missed my first game and decided to drop out. I took pictures and talked to people and boy was I glad I did that.
Walking around I got to see what many people were playing. Chaos Space Marines were clearly on top, because of Heldrakes. With the BAO giving out prizes for best armies within each codex you did end up seeing a lot of variety of armies. Lots of IG because of Forge World, along with Contemptors for Marines. It was hard to tell in such a large event who was playing what; allies having changed the game in a big way.
The real news and the main reason you are reading this post is because you want to know who won
The winner of the Bay Area Open 2013 was Elizabeth Katherine Foster and her Chaos Daemons! Her list consisted of the following.
- 2 Heralds of Tzeentch on Chariots
- 1 Bloodthirster
- 3 Flamer units
- 4 Horror units
- 2 Screamer units
She played Alan Hernandez's Drago Wing in round 5 and Dark Eldar in round 6 and finally Alan Bajramovic IG/SW army in round 7.
Alan's list was mostly Saber Platforms and three Drop Pods with Wolves in them.
Alan Bajramovic is a member of the American ETC team.
He won best Overall at WargamesCon 2012 I believe.
Liz went undefeated (a first at the BAO) going 7-0. Frontline Gaming will have plenty of coverage of the final game with a full Video Battle Report.
But it came down really to Liz making enough saves on her Horrors to claim an objective and leaving Alan with only one unit of non-scoring Wolf Guard left.
Liz's victory will obviously garner a lot of attention because she is female. Overlooking, that fact is pretty naive. It is a big deal and pretending that gender isn't important is pure poppycock.
Liz is the first woman to win a major 40k event. Not to say women haven't won tournaments before and some of the best 40k painters in the world are women as well.
What Liz did though was win a 140+ Swiss W/L tournament without any influence from sportsmanship, comp, or painting scores.
It is also a big deal because 40k is perhaps the most male dominated geek hobby to break into.
So, here is to Liz for winning and breaking down barriers, it is a great day for wargamers everywhere!
The winner of best painted went to Israel Bojalil Sanchez and his amazing Tau army. I got a few pictures of it here.
I also took an additional 130 or so pictures from event so here a link if you want to see them.
