Let me start by saying, I enjoy 6th edition more than any previous edition, because of the variety of ways you can design and play the game.
With that said, we could be on the cusp of too much of a good thing, by the portalglyph left open in the new Inquisition Codex
Imbedded in what everyone should admit is the fairly useless Inquisition Codex is a should have saw it coming, but completely exploitable rules change. What makes the Inquisition Codex unique (only redeeming quality) is the ability to add another ally detachment called an "Inquisitorial detachment" to your army.
Here is the book example to illustrate.
So, for example, you could field an army with an Imperial Guard primary detachment, an allied detachment of Space Marines, and an Inquisitorial detachment.
The Inquisition Codex is the first instance (in 6th edition) of adding another layer of choice to an already bloating amount. To make matters worse, the Inquisition Codex doesn't really update much of the rules for Inquisitors found in the Grey Knights codex. Leaving us with a somewhat broken set of antiquated rules accessible like never before. The most glaring examples, is taking Coteaz or an Inquisitor with Rad and Psychotropic grenades. The blight of those experiences in games had been disappearing do to the popularity drop for Grey Knight armies.
Now, this wouldn't be too bad if the Inquisition codex played by the same rules as everyone else. Instead, the Inquisition Codex broke the standard force org chart. As an "Inquisitorial detachment" you are allowed to take just one HQ-- that is it. Meaning, you could choose to take only Coteaz if you want and be done. From a tactical point of view there is no reason not to take Inquisitorial units for every Imperial army. They are both super cheap and provide endless potential game breaking wargear to annoy everyone. And don't get me started on the Inquisitorial Warband possibilities.
Moreover, is this the last time we will see GW break standard Force Org or design mini dexes that don't seem thoroughly thought out? Adding these many layers to a standard game is asking a lot for many players, and I am still not sure what narrative they are trying to forge. How will an army like Tyranids, who don't get any allies, stand up to the onslaught the oodles of choice now provides? 6th edition's balance has always hung by a thin thread, a careful balance between mono army choice and ally combinations. The Inquisition Codex upends this delicate balance; committing a double sin of having old rules infiltrate the current meta, and introducing a time-consuming layer of unwanted gak.
What makes this even more offensive is the carelessness that GW seemly dropped these changes on to players. The Inquisition Codex is a hack job; there is very, very, little in new content, a smattering of Warlord Traits you will never use, stolen art from other publications, to cut and paste fluff from other sources. This codex does nothing, but take money away from people lead to believe their were rules for their favorite paperback characters like Eisenhorn. The "Inquisitorial Detachments" are an add-on in attempt to get through old metal and finecast inventory.
Now, part of me is reminded of 2012 Daemon update; which brought broken updates, like the temporary rules for Flamers and Screamers. Does this mean something completely unexpected, like a new Grey Knights codex is around the corner? The GW Digital Team commented on the update possibilities for the Inquisition Codex, stating that any updates to other related codexes could be reflected back to the Inquisition Codex as a free update. At this point GW may have dug itself a deep hole and it could also mean GW is planning on more mini dexes to flood the market like the supplements currently have.
I am sure GW knows it has found the money train of breaking down the walls between codexes, and the Inquisition Codex is just another sign they're not making any scheduled stops.
Warning
Meat for Meta is rated editorial nonsense. These articles are meant to complain about some group, somewhere, that is playing the game for all the wrong reasons or simply to just make fun of 40k nerd rage.
