You may have noticed, but if you haven't, Games Workshop just blew up all their major Social Media outlets. This happens more than one year after the infamous Spots the Space Marine debacle. The whole episode ended up with GW dropping their main Facebook page, just to hide from the big bad Internet.
Since then GW had added a highly successful Digital Editions Facebook page and generally a done better job dipping their toes into Social Media. So, the sudden removal of that page and everything else comes as a super big surprise.
Now the individual store pages are still around, but the out of the blue move, comes close to the updated GW website implementation. This leaves everyone anticipating GW returning to Social Media once the new website is up and running.
As for now though the Warhammer World, Black Library, Digital Editions, and Forge World Facebook/Twitter accounts are gone. The links on the corresponding webpages are gone as well.
The new website is on the way, as alluded to in GW financial statements, as well the leaked images of the website itself. Interestingly, there is no sign of Social Media buttons in those images, nor any sign of the much-anticipated site merger of GW and Forge World. Sure images can be faked, but it also could mean two things. Forge World is not joining the main GW site and GW doesn't want a Social Media presence beyond their Hobby Centers.
In fact, I have it on good authority that the Social Media pullback was sudden and permanent, with the decision coming directly from Tom Kirby himself. We will know by the end of next month if this is true when the website launches and there is ample time to make new Facebook pages.
As of now though, GW is without any real Social Media strategy, which in this day and age is just plain dumb and bad for business.
