Ten days ago Games Workshop attempted, once again, to unleashed its legal minions on an unsuspecting Facebook page. I posted about this Facebook book page a little over a year ago. As it turns out GW has sent a cease & desist to this little page, because basically they cannot take a joke.
Games Workshop: Fulchester page is really some lite humor when it comes to the frothing hate you can find on any wargaming forum these days.
The Games Workshop: Fulchester is a parody page copying the look of a GW game store page. They have quite the sizable following.
On June 6th this was posted:
Finally, the hordes of chaos have come for us. By which we mean GW HQ's legal team. We've tried barricading the doors, but our barricades are small and made of plastic. We attempted to black out the windows but we only had one pot of chaos black left in stock. For our own sanity, we're going to have to close our doors, probably for good. Stay safe and remember to laugh.
This post elicited a torrent of responses defending the page. The clear consensus, was to keep the page up, because this sort of thing is clearly protected by "Fair Use" and the 1st amendment. Not to mention, GW as always needs to learn they cannot just bully everyone.
The only problem though isn't American law, but Facebook terms of use...
Parody accounts on Facebook and Instagram: a no-go zone?
Not to mention where did this page originate in? It looks to be pretty British, how that plays in any legal defense I do not know.
Anyway, as of today the page is still up, but this is just another case of GW not realizing the best course is just to leave well enough alone.
