I'm so excited, and I just can't hide it, I'm about to lose control and I think I like it, I'm so excited, and I just can't hide it, And I know, I know, I know, I know. I know I want it, want it. The only song my generation knows from the Pointer Sisters happens to echo the feelings of most Chaos players are having across the world. The leak of a dedicated Khorne Codex with both Daemons and Chaos Space Marines combined, coming out this week, has sent shock waves through the warp.
The Slaaneshian bouts of ecstasy are not so much about the announcement, but more about what it means going forward. Even if it takes a year, everyone is now anticipating the same treatment for all the Chaos Gods, and at the very least every God getting a brand spanking new Great Deamon kit!
Important though, is exactly what the contents of the new Khorne Codex are. It will inform as what to expect with later God centric releases. Let us first go over what we do know at this very early stage.
What we do Know
- Chaos Space Marines are combined with Khorne Daemons.
- Judging from the accompanied box set it won't only be Khorne Berserkers units coming from CSM to join the Codex.
- Khorne will get nine (cards) powers to use. (Blood Tally)
- New Formations and Detachments.
What we don't know
- Will their actually be any rules changes to units?
- Will any units get model updates?
- Does this guarantee the next CSM codex won't have any Cult units?
- Does this mean no more Daemon codex?
- Will there be a unified Chaos Detachment?
- How will the other Gods play with each other?
What we can guess (if unit rules change).
- Daemon and CSM Independent Characters can join to each others units.
- Bloodthirster will move to Lord of War slot.
- Sacred Khorne number will mean something. (See... Kharn Dataslate)
- Blanding of Rules and cost reductions.
Not so far-fetched changes.
- Warp storm Table is gone.
- Chaos Boon Table is gone.
- Character forced Challenges removed.
- Marks as we know them removed.
- Kharn as a Lord of War.
- To protect IP don't rule out old Wargear or Units making a comeback.
That is just for the Khorne codex.
The biggest question and one I alluded to earlier, is how long will we have to wait for the rest of the Gods? The Greater Deamon models being completed is a long-standing rumor for two years now, even if people were talking out there ass before, what now? Everyone wants those models, and seems like the perfect vehicle to sell each book. The current rumor mill had each God getting one week release at some point, but that rumor made it sound like White Dwarf exclusive only stuff, not a Codex. So, the hope is the that rumor was half right.
If you want to make rules sense GW should get all the Daemon/CSM stuff out as quickly as possible to avoid confusion between old and new rules. The real sad part and the one that should give everyone pause, is GW could just release a Codex with only formations and detachments and no unit/global rule changes. It would be a devastating gut punch, but not unprecedented by GW standards.
If you are looking for something to complain about, and I am sure 40k quitters have already pounced on, is this is a sly way to make players buy four books instead of one or two? It is a pretty big money grab, but a justifiable one given the background. I know it won't stop me from giving GW all my money!
