BoK Reviews: White Dwarf Issue #116

White Dwarf Issue #116: Imperial Knights: Renegade

White Dwarf reviews operate differently than other Blood of Kittens Reviews. The goal with these reviews is to place a value for each issue. The rating system is one to four stars, each star represents $1 in value, to a max of four dollars. The review values are also Warhammer 40k based; Age of Sigmar dedicated issues will still be reviewed, but valued for Warhammer 40k players. It means you could see many low valued issues, where a general Games Workshop hobbyist actually valuing them more. Keep this in mind when deciding if a particular White Dwarf Issue is good for you.

Contents: New Releases

The singular GW miniature released this week is the Imperial Knights: Renegade game box. Well really “game” is a Battletech light, but this set is all about mondo savings on some Imperial Knights. In addition to the price cut, we get non-Forge World rules for running Chaos Knights! The set is tailored made for two people to buy and split the cost. GW also has a few new hobby products with a travel miniature ARd Case, and a decent deal Build + Paint starter set with paints, glue, brush, and cutters. Finally, the Black Library presents Throne World the 5th novel in the Beasts Arises series.

Contents: Coming Soon!

Here is a interesting look at the upcoming video game release Total War: Warhammer. This game is a big deal as one of the most storied video game franchises is producing something in the GW universe. The only problem is the IP used is kinda dead, being Old World, not the shinny new Age of Sigmar. It is set for release on May 26th, so look for very confused PC gamers as they find out they can’t play the miniature game that goes along with the video game…sigh.

What is GW saying?

Contents: Duel to the Death

This White Dwarf section goes into the game play for the new Renegade Knight box set. If you have the God Breaker rules this will all be familiar. The game like I said is like Battletech with a mix of Adeptus Titanicus. GW also mentions a product tie in with the critically acclaimed Freeblade mobile game.

Contents: Paint Splatter

This Paint Splatter has details on how to make your very own Chaos Knight with emphasis on it being newly converted.

Contents: Readers’ Models

As you might expect we get a very Imperial Knight heavy Reader’ Models. They run the gambit of skill and technique with some great work. The one below is my favorite by Michael Trainer.

Contents: Spoils of War

GW continues to support the Betrayal at Calth with another exclusive mission called Spoils of War. The mission is all about capturing munitions for the Ultramarines, while the Word Bearers must either run out the clock or annihilate the loyalists.

Contents: The Week In…

Only thing worth a damn in this section is some extra hobby tips for giving your Imperial Knights some extra Chaos taint.

Next Issue Hint: Any Git That Gets in my Way is Gonna Get ‘Imself Snipped!

Final Verdict

Issue #116, is back to good form for a White Dwarf with an intriguing release, along with exclusive usable content. Only the heavy handed used car salesmanship keeps this issue from greatness.
