Tournament Report: London GT 2018

by | May 19, 2018

Hey everyone!

It is a lovely weekend in London, great for a giant Warhammer 40k tournament or even a royal wedding, either way the stars have aligned for many happy Brits of all stripes. The London GT in its second year and about to really explode on the scene with a championship event estimated be around 400 players. Now if it actually reaches those numbers it will really be something special.

The London GT is going to have the best British players and many international ones, as this is the first giant tournament since the FAQ (also using the beta rules) and will determine the 40k meta for months to come. It is also a golden opportunity for English players to showcase their confidence as the vanguard for Warhammer 40k list building design.

An event this new and of this size, expect a lot of hiccups, look for a late start time and sad look tables. In addition, the London GT will be using an “interesting” mission system combining Maelstrom Cards and Eternal War missions. It is kinda of a throw back to past Adepticon events and attempts to balance the what Games Workshop has provided without writing entire new mission system from the ground up. I am not too sure about the potential for success, but taking this sort of risk is commendable.

As for Blood of Kittens coverage, we will have a bit of a delay because the lack of wifi and distance between internet locations, but we will do our best to provide updates and tons of pictures. Things might just turn into a after event recap with the top lists and insights into the event.

So as is come back periodically to this post for any news or drama as it happens!

ROUND 1

Round 1 got underway about an hour late, which is pretty impressive considering most Europeons are not use to use the BCP app and this was a large tourney. It looks like they got around +350 championship players which is short of the 400, but amazing turnout for a game which the typical largest British events get 100 players.

There is also a ton if amazing looking armies, but sadly it is very hard to get a good look at them because of the real main issues with the event, namely space!

Everyone is packed in like sardines and even some tables have odd seating arrangements. It is almost impossible for anyone to get to middle tables or have space for set down there armies for deployment, The other big problem, but one you could see coming with such growth is the terrible looking terrain. Now this isn’t to say the terrain doesn’t do the job, but it has no verity and looks like an eye sore when considering the amount of pretty armies around.

Round 2

Nothing too exciting to report, but here are pictures from the event as you will see it is kinda cramped and hard to get good shots of armies without really bugging people…

Round 3

In a very strange quirk of fate, Alex Harrison vs Geoff Robinson are playing in round 3, but what makes it really funny is they will have to immediately play each other again to determine the winner from Friday’s invitational tournament. So some interesting news one of the Top players has been caught playing a pretty big rule wrong, I guess it was caught on streamed game, as it turns out you cannot use the Greater Good Power to have all your Hammerheads Overwatch on a target.

Round 4

It will start bright and early London time with a top table showcasing a Imperial Soup and a new spamtastic work around the beta rules.

Final Round of Invitational

Geoff Robinson vs. Alex Harrison Round 2 because they already played round 3 of the normal championships and good thing this time they are playing the Hammerheads correctly. Geoff ended up winning by almost getting tabled, he got good set of cards and swooped in on to the objectives at the end to win, avenging an earlier loss to Alex in the championships.

Round 5

Since the event has so many players and only 5 rounds we won’t see an undisputed winner for the tournament, instead we will get about 6-10 undefeated players. Here is are examples of those who made it though with perfect records, with Mike Porter in the drivers seat to be crowded best general.
