Sisters of Battle Beta Codex:

The codex in Chapter Approved is but a taste of what we’ve got planned, but it’s already incredibly expansive, featuring a reworked and improved Acts of Faith system, Order Convictions, Stratagems, Warlord Traits and Relics. To help you prepare and stoke the fires of your hype, we’re previewing all of them today.

The Sisters of Battle are renowned for the sheer force of their faith, their belief so strong that it seems to allow them to overcome their physical limitations and perform incredible feats of strength. In the new codex, Acts of Faith are powerful abilities. To cast one, you spend a Faith Point, then see if you can roll over the act’s Devotion Value. Take The Passion:

With a Devotion Value of 5, you’d need to roll a 5 or over – at which point, you can proceed to turn your enemy into heretic-themed bolognese with your eviscerators. You’ll be able to influence this roll in a number of ways, particularly by using a Simulacrum Imperialis and Dialogus.

Unlike in the previous system, Acts of Faith are designed to scale up based on army size, with you getting an additional Faith Point for every ten models with the Acts of Faith rule in your force. This makes the Sisters of Battle incredibly flexible, with Acts of Faith, combined with Stratagems, allowing them to adjust their tactics on the fly.

This codex also offers Sisters of Battle a host of sub-faction rules with which to customise your army even further, representing the unique battle tactics employed by the various Orders Militant. Each gives your army a distinct flavour, as well as being pretty powerful. The Stoic Endurance of the Order of the Valorous Heart makes them even harder to kill, and is fantastic when combined with the 6+ invulnerable save that all Sisters of Battle have:

The Daughters of the Ebon Chalice, on the other hand, are particularly good at pulling off Acts of Faith, and make those trickier Acts that little bit easier to use:

There are six Order Convictions to choose from in total, giving you yet more options when building your army, and letting you represent your favourites from the lore as never before.

With Acts of Faith representing the divine powers of the Sisters of Battle and Order Convictions the character of their sub-factions, a host of Stratagems allow you to use their particular tactical abilities. Turns out it’s a lot more complicated than “burn anything that looks like a heretic”. Suffer Not The Witch, for instance, allows you to put the hurt on your chosen Psyker, whether it’s a Hive Tyrant or Magnus the Red himself!

The humble storm bolter is also getting a massive upgrade in the new codex, with squads of Dominions wielding them suddenly a very appealing prospect indeed, thanks to blessed bolts:

The new Stratagems are designed to interact with and complement the Acts of Faith, making the Sisters of Battle incredibly deep and tactically rewarding for a forward-thinking general. Vessel of the Emperor’s Will is a great example, maximising the effectiveness of your chosen Act of Faith:

Last, but not least, you’ll have a host of Warlord Traits and Relics with which to customise your Characters. These range from options that make a Canoness or Missionary even deadlier in close combat to some great support choices. By combining the Book of St Lucius and Indomitable Belief, for instance, you’ll have a key defensive lynchpin for the rest of your forces:

Alright – one more preview! Penitent Engines have got even better in the beta codex, and we can’t resist sharing just how. For one, these war machines now always fight twice in the Fight phase, and for another, they’ve been given an ability to ignore wounds:

New Missions:

New Rules:

  • Tau Farsight’s the Eight:
  • Looted Wagons:
  • -1 to hit “Chapter Tactics” type rules across all codexes is now +1 cover
  • Grey Knights & Thousand Sons getting Full Smite

Warhammer Community Sneak Peaks

Narratively, the 41st Millennium is full of stories where raw recruits are forged in the fires of battle, gaining new skills as they fight across a war zone. Thanks to the latest edition of Chapter Approved, you’ll be able to represent that in your games with Battle Honours:

When using it, you’ll gain points in your campaigns based on how your units perform (scoring kills, controlling objectives, or just participating in battle), which can be used to level them up, all the way from green to legendary. Every time they level, they’ll get to choose a new Battle Honour, like Inhuman Resilience, Breachers, or Experimental Ammunition:

By the end of your campaigns, your entire army will be distinct in some way, adding a real sense of weight and meaning to your battles. Each ability has been designed to be big on flavor and thematic weight without unbalancing your games, so if you’re one of the many players who uses matched play points in narrative play, you’ll find this system slots into your battles with ease.

Combined with the Custom Characters rules from the open play section, you’ll really be able to go wild customizing your army in this Chapter Approved!

Desperate last stands, epic confrontations against insurmountable odds – narrative play is all about ramping up the awesome. Key to that is missions – and in Chapter Approved 2018 Edition, we’ve provided six new ones for you to try. Each has been painstakingly designed to balance narrative, fairness and fun and to provide a framework for the battle stories you’ll be telling for years to come.

After last year’s Chapter Approved looked at Planetary Onslaught and Stronghold Assault, this time around we’re looking at Cities of Death – intense urban skirmishes in the ruined metropolises of the 41st Millennium. One of the most exciting Cities of Death missions is Thunder Run – an intense battle where the attacker desperately attempts to break through enemy lines to wreak havoc.

We’ve also provided new narrative rules to try in any of your games, such as a new, deeper cover system, options for concealed deployment, battlefields infested with xenos beasts and more.

With Chapter Approved 2018, you’ll be able to convert pretty much any kind of Looted Wagon you fancy. We’ve provided three incredibly flexible datasheets, each designed to cover a distinct archetype to build around and packed with options. The Kart is an Orkish transport about the size of a Chimera, the Wagon is a battle tank based on tanks like the Leman Russ, and the Battle Fortress is the equivalent of a Baneblade. Basically, if you’ve ever looked at a tank from another army and thought “I bet I could Ork-ify” that, you can.

These profiles aren’t just great for open play – you could easily use them in a narrative campaign, looting your enemies’ most beloved vehicles and turning them against them. Don’t worry if you’ve never converted your models before! We’ve included a short guide with some key tips to get you started. You’ll be unleashing your inner Big Mek in no time…

In Chapter Approved 2018, we’re offering you a new set of tools designed to make creating custom characters super simple, with a huge set of trait tables and guidelines. Maybe you want your Primaris Captain to be a dead-eyed sniper with a custom bolt rifle, or perhaps your Hive Tyrant is even more terrifying than its kin, inspiring fear in all who face it. You’re also free to let fate take the wheel and roll up completely random combinations.

One of the coolest uses of this system is giving your favourite Black Library character rules. A Chaos Lord with the Heirloom Weapon trait, Terrifying ability and Ferocious Combatant characteristic modifier makes a great Talos from Aaron Dembski-Bowden’s Night Lords series, while a Lord Commissar with Reactive Tactics, Stealth Assault and Courageous makes for a great Ibram Gaunt.

At the very least, it’s a great excuse to convert your models – the studio team, for instance, used the system to make a custom Silver Skulls character, then built and painted him:

None of these abilities are game-breakingly strong, so if you’re playing friendly games based on rough points costs, feel free to use them and balance it out by letting your opponent take a custom character too. For narrative play, meanwhile, you could roll new abilities after every battle and organically grow your favourite characters into storied champions.

If you’re looking to let loose with your creative side, this year’s Chapter Approved has got you covered – and we haven’t even looked at narrative play yet! Check back tomorrow for more previews, or take a look at yesterday’s matched play preview.

Missions are at the heart of matched play, each designed to test a different aspect of your generalship and give tournament organizers a host of options when designing their events. We’re bringing 12 new missions to matched play in this Chapter Approved, with 6 for Eternal War and 6 for Maelstrom of War, designed in conjunction with our expert playtesters to create a balanced, objective-focused and fun experience.

One of the most interesting additions to several of these missions is Acceptable Casualties. This being the grim darkness of the far future, often, any sacrifice is worthwhile in pursuit of greater victory, and we want more of the game to reflect that. In missions with Acceptable Casualties, Sudden Death rules do not apply, meaning if you’ve played to the objectives, you can still win, even if your army gets wiped out!

This turns list-building for matched play on its head as your army might be able to table the opponent, but if it can’t capture objectives, then you’ll be unlikely to claim victory. Speed will also be key in winning these missions – if you can grab enough points early on, you’ll be able to claim an insurmountable lead.

One of these awesome missions is Narrow the Search, where the radius in which you can control each objective starts off as an 18? bubble and shrinks every turn, bringing both players’ forces inexorably closer…

As well as missions, we’ve taken the opportunity both to enshrine some Big FAQ rules in print as well as taking a look at points. As before, this review is pretty wide-ranging, but there are a few highlights…

Take the Necrons as an example – cool units like Triarch Praetorians have had a hefty reduction in points, making them a much more viable choice in a Necron army, and offering aspiring Overlords an interesting tactical option for their matched play forces.

Grey Knights, too, have seen some sweeping points reductions to a bunch of core units, including Paladins and Purifiers, as well as the Grand Master in Nemesis Dreadknight. If you collect Grey Knights, you’ll have loads more flexibility when building your lists and may well find units you previously overlooked to be much more appealing.

It’s fair to say that some of the most stunning models in Warhammer 40,000 weren’t getting much time on the table in the matched play scene (Wraithknight, we’re looking at you), so we’ve made some adjustments to help encourage their use. For example, the aforementioned Wraithknight has had an enormous reduction in points, now costing a little over 300 points, rather than over 400 before weapons! You’re now free to use these extra points on reinforcements, or more Wraithknights…

We’ve also taken the opportunity to look at some units that might be over performing based on their points costs, making increases where necessary. Chaos Cultists, for instance, have been given a small increase based on their overwhelming popularity in Chaos lists of all kinds. Several other units that have been dominating lists have had a similar treatment – we’re looking to make a more diverse field where every unit has a legitimate place in matched play.

Like the previous edition of Chapter Approved, we’ve also had the chance to look at some Forge World datasheets and tweak points accordingly. One option we’ve had loads of feedback on is the Knight Magaera. Loads of you guys thought this cost a few too many points – and we agree! After some further testing, we’ve dropped its cost to a more appropriate level. If you’ve been holding off on adding a Forge World model to your army, you may well find yourself with the perfect excuse.

Loads of other content in this year’s Chapter Approved is designed to be compatible with matched play too, like the Eight – Commander Farsight’s elite unit of battlesuit-armoured heroes. Taken as a single Lord of War choice and costing over 1000 points, the Eight are awesome, featuring new datasheets and Signature Systems to represent their unique abilities. If you’re looking for a powerful new choice for your T’au Empire army, this could be it…

The Sisters of Battle beta codex has also been provided with a full set of points for matched play (which we’d love your feedback on via social media and email), while Index: Renegade Knights has been reprinted in full and remains an official part of the game. The future’s bright for matched play…

Chapter Approved is the essential guide for gamers of all kinds – however you play, you’ll find something inside for you. New Missions and points profiles are set to shake up matched play, while for open play, deep character creation rules for custom champions and new Looted Wagon profiles reward your creativity. Narrative fans, meanwhile, can play through the Cities of Death missions or level up your units across campaigns with Battle Honours.

We haven’t even gotten into the new rules for The Eight, or the beta Codex: Adepta Sororitas – this year’s Chapter Approved is absolutely packed to the gills with great content.

You’ll be able to get Chapter Approved 2018 in all the usual formats – print, digital and enhanced iBook, as well as the Warlord Edition – a limited-run version that features a pack of invaluable gaming accessories, including army roster sheets, datacards for the Sisters of Battle, Command and Victory Point trackers and more…

Finally, fans at the Open Day have had the chance to find out more about Chapter Approved 2018 for themselves, as well as talking to the team behind this essential guide for gamers.

For those of you not at the Open Day, here are some tidbits we’ve learned…

It’ll let you customize your characters more than ever before!

Chapter Approved 2018 features a new character creation system for open play where you can build your very own legendary heroes. If you’re feeling creative, this year’s edition is going to be great for you.

…and your units!

One of the takeaways from the narrative play section was Battle Honours – a system that lets your units level up and develop new skills throughout campaigns.

It’s good news for the Grey Knights

Matched play fans have been scrutinizing the new points from the book, and it’s clear at this point that one massive winner is the Grey Knights, who have seen sweeping points reductions across a swathe of units.

The Adepta Sororitas are back – and better than ever

Of course, Codex: Adepta Sororitas is one of the most exciting things about Chapter Approved this year, and we’ve had a chance to get an even better look at the rules. We’ll be previewing these in depth soon, but in the meantime, here’s another awesome Stratagem to tide you over:

Talking of the 41st Millennium, we’ve just revealed what you’ll find in this year’s edition of Chapter Approved – your essential guide for gaming in the 41st Millennium. Chapter Approved 2018 is packed with content for all kinds of players – we’ve got a sneak peek at some of the most exciting headlines.

Take Looted Wagons – Chapter Approved is the home for experimentation and innovation, so is the perfect place to include rules and guidelines for including your most kunnin’ konversions in your Ork army in open and narrative games.

Or the Eight. When Codex: T’au Empire was released, we had loads of fans ask about fielding Commander Farsight’s elite bodyguard – so, in this year’s Chapter Approved, we’ll be bringing these iconic heroes to life in style. You’ll find a host of new datasheets for using this gathering of Fire caste legends in your games, including matched play.

As if that wasn’t enough, Chapter Approved 2018 will also feature a beta codex for the Adepta Sororitas! This is quite possibly Warhammer 40,000’s most anticipated codex ever, and we want to make sure we absolutely nail it, so, alongside our usual rigorous professional playtesting, we’re asking you to help us out and provide your thoughts.

Make no mistake – while this is a beta codex, it’s a fully fledged one that offers the Adepta Sororitas more options and more cool stuff than ever before, allowing you (for the first time EVER) to represent the unique tactics of various orders with unique Orders Militant Convictions. The Order of the Bloody Rose, for instance, are zealous close combat specialists:

There are loads of nifty Stratagems too – one our favorites is Burning Descent, which lets Seraphim purge the unclean from on high by giving them a free shooting attack when they arrive and increasing the range of their hand flamers:
