As I continue slowly catching up with my projects, I decided to start on something I've been super excited to start. I told you guys back in April that I'd be painting up a Trollblood Mountain King for a friend of mine, and today I finally got that going!

When Luke gave me his MK to paint, he had 0 preferences on how he should look. Seriously, polka dots was an option he gave me. I had planned to go with the standard color scheme since I like the Trollblood colors, but since Luke is the biggest comic nerd I know I decided on the scheme that everyone talks about doing for him, but I haven't seen done - The Incredible Hulk.

While I was able to use preshading on the Behemoth without a hitch, this guy took four layers of white highlight + green ink until I was satisfied. Did I mention that I love that technique? Okay I did, but it's still true! I wondered how different the technique would look on something living as opposed to all the flat surfaces, but I really like it. His muscles are more dramatic, his torso doesn't get lost under his rock-beard, and all those little details in his body sculpt get brought out.

The biggest issue I'm having right now is what to do with all his rocks. Doing his loincloth purple is a given, but I don't know how weird he'd look if I made the rocks black to match Hulk's hair. In the end it'd look like obsidian, which still works to a degree, but I don't know if I'd be as happy with it. I really like the rocks on the original, but I also don't like breaking the theme.

I'm also SO tempted to paint up the little pygmies popping out of him in Avengers colors. There are 5 full pygs hanging around his body and 2 that are spawning out of his flesh (which I'd probably keep green unless there are 2 lesser Avengers I could use).

  • Blue/white for Captain America
  • Red/yellow for Iron Man
  • Purple for Hawkeye
  • Black for Black Widow
  • Red with a touch of blue/white for Thor
I'm also trying to figure out a way to incorporate the classic red bricks from the Hulk's logo. My initial thought was paint the ground he's smashing as bricks, but then the rest of the ground would need to be brick and that's just weird. I could paint his front arc like bricks... or just call it a day after the Avengers colors.

So what's with the title? When I was cleaning out my airbrush I heard a very weird whistling sound coming from my compressor. After some inspection I found that some valve insists on releasing all the air from my tank as soon as the pistons stop running. I think I just need to tighten something, but since I don't want my poor mechanical skills to literally blow up in my face, I'm waiting to hear back from the manufacturer for some help (or a copy of the manual that my painting area seems to have eaten).

I know I promised you guys a work in progress on this guy, but... I forgot to record anything up to this point. So take my WIP from the Behemoth, pretend red=green, and we're ready to continue!

See you tomorrow!
