Last night Lee came over and we talked about Unbound Armies in Warhammer 40K and how battling 12 Hydras, 6 Riptides, 12 Mauler Fiends or however many Grey Knight Dreadnoughts or Vengeance Batteries you could cram into 1500 points was just ridiculous.
But!
What if we scaled it down?
And that's how we came up with *drum roll* 500pts of Unbound Fun.
At our last Throne of Lolz tournament (a private tournament formed from people who couldn't get tickets to Throne of Skulls one year), we pitched 2 of Ian's Tau Riptide's against Lee's freshly painted Imperial Knight and it was quite a good giggle.
So rather than needing X10 of an expensive unit, you'd only need 2, 4 or maybe a few more. With that in mind, here are a few 500pts forces which sprang to mind. Some are fluffy, some are cheesy and some just seem like a good laugh.
But most importantly, it's likely that you'll have (most of) these units in your chosen army already.
4 Chaos Maulerfiends
4 Space Wolf Lone Wolves
2 Tau Riptides
1 Imperial Knight
1 Eldar Seer Council on Jetbikes
1 Tau Commander Farsight and Maximum Bodyguards
1 Grey Knights Grand Master Draigo and Paladin Squad
10 Ork Buggies (Mad Max or Formula Waaaagh themed)
9 Imperial Guard Sentinels (Recon Company themed)
I think you could have some really fun games with all of these.
Even if some could be quite one sided. But that's half the fun I guess.
Unbound Armies, Tournament Play and Whatnot
New things are scary. The concept of an Unbound Army is scary, because all the restrictions are gone and the gates of insane competitive play have been flung open!
But in truth, Unbound is no different from Escalation or Stronghold Assault. Most tournament organisers won't allow it and you don't have to agree to it for friendly play either. In the same way you don't have to consent to the use of Forgeworld units in your games.
So while Games Workshop will often say you have the freedom to allow whatever you want in your games, don't forget that you also have the freedom to disallow whatever you want in your games. And tournament organisers will do exactly the same.
Y'know, you don't have to buy more stuff just to win at this game.
Besides, the Space Wolves will conquer all, regardless of rules changes!
