Check out this awesome Thunder Wolf Cavalry army list put together by James Karch.

He took it to the Throne Of Skulls tournament at Warhammer World where it won 4 out of 5 games by running about killing everything. Although while it's good fun, it is very one dimensional.

We thought it would have got shot to pieces.

But due to its sheer speed, it gets across the board and into close combat incredibly quickly.

In one game the Thunderwolf Lord, leading a pack of Thunderwolves even took down an Imperial Knight with relative ease, before sweeping away the rest of the army!

The following list is for games of 1,500 points, but you could easily add to it with more Wolf Lords riding Thunderwolves, or go Unbound and add more of whatever you want. Fenrisian Wolves can't hold objectives when they're Troops anyway!

Perhaps you could even an Imperial Knight?

It would be one of the few units able to keep up with the charging cavalry, fulfill a similar close combat role and provide fire support as the army advances.

Buying This Army

Personally, I would stick to plastic models only

So I would convert my Thunder Wolf Lord and Canis Wolfborn from the Thunderwolf Cavalry boxed set.

I would convert my Fenrisian Wolves from Chaos Warhounds, because you get 10 in a box opposed to 5 Fenrisian Wolves for the same price.

Finally, I'd convert my Biker Rune Priest using leftover bits from one of the Space Wolves Pack boxes and a Space Marine Bike.

This is because it will save me an absolute fortune!

And I always preferred plastic miniatures for painting and durability.

So with this in mind, I priced up the army and it came to £180.

5 Boxes of Thunderwolf Cavalry
2 Boxes of Chaos Warhounds
1 Space Marine Bike

= £180 approx

You know, this could be the cheapest 1,500pts army ever!

Unbound: Taking the Army off the Leash!

Is it better to drop Canis and the Fenrisian Wolves by going 'Unbound' and taking another Wolf Lord and more Thunderwolf Cavalry instead?

Even though nothing in the army is Battle-Forged, because Fenrisian Wolves cannot hold objectives, I would argue that going 'Unbound' is not the right choice.

This is because you need the Fenrisian Wolves to provide some fast moving fodder,

And you need Canis Wolfborn to give them all a much needed Leadership boost with his Saga Of The Wolfkin and Lord Of The Wolfkin abilities.

You may also need to 'hop' your Independent Characters from Thunderwolf Cavalry units to Fenrisian Wolf units as they get whittled down (or wiped out) by enemy fire.

Anyway, this army looks like a blast to play!

James certainly had fun with it. And for £180 I'm definitely going to give it a go in the future.
