Even though the last month has been pretty crazy and I got almost zero work done on my Dark Angels, all is not lost. I said I got almost zero work done. The little that I did manage to get done was on my Champion entry. I managed to build him up to a point that I'm happy with and will probably leave him in this semi-constructed state for ease of painting (I stuck him together with poster tack for the photos). I've only painted three miniatures so far but I still want this guy to be special and plan to spend as much time as I can getting his paint job right.

I wanted this guy to have a real Veteran feel about him as if he'd been fighting for over a century and risen to a position of command. So I crossed my fingers and broke out the greenstuff. Since he isn't wearing robes the most important thing for me was to give him a loincloth. Some cloth is better than no cloth, right? For me, greenstuff has been fairly hit and miss so far. It's either magic or total rubbish. Luckily the Emperor must have seen me from the corner of his eye when I attempted this and it turned out pretty well.

I've still got some modeling to do. When I started building this guy I wanted to give him a commanding pose worthy of a Veteran Sergeant so I gave him the pointing arm from the Command Squad box and then picked out a bolt pistol for his other arm. I also gave him the chest piece with the gorget from the Dark Angels Veteran box and one of the helmets from the Venerable Dreadnought box.

What I failed to check while putting him together was if his wargear matched up with the codex entry. It didn't. He had only a pistol and needed either a bolter or a close combat weapon to seal the deal and I decided to go with the latter. But if both his hands are being used already, how best do give him another weapon? A sheathed sword on his hip is how. I got the idea after seeing sheathed swords on the Black Templar upgrade sprue. I've got two options to make this work. Either buy the Black Templar bit and replace the hilt and cross-guard or make the whole thing from scratch. I'm going to try and scratch build one (ambitious I know) and if it doesn't work out I'll grab the Black Templar bit.
