When I was a wee lad, my elementary school held a magazine subscription fundraiser. Thankfully, in addition to the opportunity for multiple subscriptions to Vibe, the order booklet also featured comic books. My parents let me pick one title. Of course, I picked Transformers.

The first issue that arrived was number 19, shown above, the first appearance of Omega Supreme.

There are a lot of things that go into making us who we are, but I know that I work at a university and am pursuing a PhD in English in part because of that comic book (that, and an E. E. Cummings poem, but Cummings never wrote about giant robots).

Today is Free Comic Book Day. Celebrate by taking someone to a local store.

Who knows what might come of it.
