The lil grots and I celebrated our nation's birthday by visiting Fort Michilimackinac.
As far as military history goes, the fort is actually pretty weak. Its cannons were never fired in anger, and the only "battle" that occurred on its grounds occurred when the local Ojibwe staged a fake game of baaga'adowe (now known as lacrosse) and overran the place when the ball was deliberately tossed over the fort's walls. The Ojibwe killed many of the inhabitants, but gave the fort back a year later when the British agreed to return to the French practices of giving more and better gifts to the native peoples.
Despite its rather lacking guns and blood historical appeal, a place like the fort sure does have an ambiance for a gamer. The interpreters all dress like British Red Coats (an irony not lost on the actors on the 4th of July) and sport muskets. It's enough to inspire an Empire army (almost), and all the sharp pointy sticks surrounding the fort--useless in their time against cannons--have a nice ork/ogre/beastman resonance. It's lucky, I suppose, I spent all my money on gas to get there and back.
So now a wee bit of summer vacation can begin. My plans for the next month include painting two full Space Marine tactical squads and working up a submission for the current Black Library submission window. When it gets rejected, I'll post it, like I did before.
Wish me luck on all fronts.
