This post is to find out people's opinions on the troop choices available to Tyranids, as they have a very large selection of troop choices to choose from.
Firstly there are gaunts, either termagants or hormagaunts, which are your utmost basic troops, which are the cheaper ones per model, but require larger numbers in order to work efficiently.
Then there are ripper swarms which cost more points, with similar stats to a termagant, without the gun, with an extra 2 wounds, lower initiative and more attacks, best for tying up enemy shooting units, such as space marine devastators.
Then there are the more durable combat troops, which are genestealers, made purely for combat, costing more points, but making up for them with a better armor save, better strength, toughness, initiative, weapon skill etc...
Finally there are tyranid warriors, the most elite troops, which can be upgraded for either combat or shooting capability... or both!
Though these models cost far more in points than any other troop choice, but you need less for a brood.
In my opinion all of the troop choices have equal capability if use use the same amount of points of each, and if you use them the correct way.
However my personal preference is hormagaunts simply because I like the model for them the most, and because I personally prefer the look of a swarm when dealing with troops.
What do you think? Either through playing with or against Tyranids?
