Chris from Sippin' on Paint Water is back with another great installment of Badab Workshop. This time around it's the mysterious splinter group from the Iron Hands.

The Sons of Medusa!

"I'm running a little late with this one but it's finally here, you might notice the change in scenery surrounding this figure, he was painted over at my sister's house while my soon to be brother-in-law and I had a 'Skyrim' marathon, much to the displeasure of my sister. We would take turns playing the game, when he would have the controller on lock-down I would try and finish a stage or two on this guy. Somewhere in all of this we managed to go see the 'The Hunger Games', the movie is great but I never read the books so my opinion is entirely based on the film, my sister, who has read all the books did enjoy the movie immensely, but she said it was violent enough. Well you aren't here to read about my weekend, on with the tutorial.
Paints you'll need
Chaos Black
Skull White
Gnarloc Green
Boltgun Metal
Chainmail
Astronomican Grey
Dark Flesh
Dheneb Stone
Elf Flesh
Blood Red
Golden Yellow

Washes you'll need
Thraka Green
Badab Black
Devlan Mud
Baal Red

1. Start with even coat of flat black spray primer.

2. A heavy coat of Gnarloc Green on all the areas of armor.

3. Now a glaze of Thraka Green over the Gnarloc Green,
this stage brings out the detail in the armor and tones
down the yellow hue of the Gnarloc Green.

4. Apply Boltgun Metal to all the weapon and bionic bits
on the mini.

5. Paint all the joints of the armor and the casings of the
weapons with Chaos Black.

6. A wash of Badab Black over the Boltgun Metal areas.

7. Now it's time to prep all the area that will be white, a
coat of Astronomican Grey will make this easy. I should
also point out that Sons of Medusa have white helmets.

8. Dark flesh is my go to paint for a lot of things, on this guy
it's the base coat for his flesh, the color of the ammo belt,
and the first stage of the wax bit of his purity seal.

9. Paint the parchment part of the purity seal with Dheneb
Stone.

10. To paint his flesh I overbrush a mix of 1 part Elf Flesh
1 part Dark Flesh on all the exposed areas of skin.

11. As a final highlight for his skin I use a mix of 2 parts
Elf Flesh 1 part Dark Flesh, I selectively apply this mix
to all the raised areas of the face such as brow, nose and
cheekbones.

12. A wash of Dark Flesh over his skin and purity seal
will help to bring out the details.

13. Time to paint the the trim with Skull White, while you
have the white out paint the eyes and lenses as well.

14. Highlight the purity seal with Blood Red.

15. Highlight the metal bits with Chainmail, and put a
drop of Baal Red wash on any lenses or scopes.

16. This was a personal choice to add some more color to
the mini, I painted the hoses and cables with Golden Yellow.

17. For the chapter badge I start with a circle of Skull White.

18. Now paint eight points, it's worth taking a little extra time
to make sure the points are evenly spaced.

19. Now paint a skull in the middle of the halo, don't worry
about leaving the eye sockets or nostrils, just go back and
add them in with Gnarloc Green.

The Sons of Medusa are a rarity, they were not founded
as most chapters are.

They came to be as a result of a religious schism between
factions of the Adeptus Mechanicus.

The dispute between Mechanicus factions extended into
the Iron Hands and their successors, those who sided
with the separatists became the Sons of Medusa.

There you have it, a little late but it turned out all right, I went with a medium green for their armor more in line with the artwork found in the Imperial Armour books. I do remember the example given in the old Third Edition Codex Space Marines, neon green armor and white helmets, very striking, very difficult to paint. If you have a suggestion for which chapter to do next leave a comment, there are still quite a few to go. Thanks for reading and stay thirsty."
