After what seems like way too long, I finally have my first unit of Ogres ready for dipping:
These are the Ogres (a.k.a. Bulls), the basic Core unit for the Ogre Kingdoms. I chose to work on these guys first as they have somewhat less details than their more elite Core counterparts, the Ironguts. Once they have been dipped and anti-shine’d, I will know what these colours look like when dipped, and can proceed from their.
Speaking of colours, before I go on, let’s see what I’ve used:
- Prime: Vallejo Desert Tan Base Surface Primer (two coats)
- Skin: Ryn Flesh (two coats)
- Hair: Bloodstone
- Pants: Skorne Red, Sanguine Base, Bastion Grey, Rucksack Tan, Traitor Green, Cygnar Blue Base
- Leathers: Gun Corps Brown
- Metals: Pig Iron, Glorious Gold
- Lips and Nipples: Midlund Flesh
- Teeth: Morrow White
- Bone: Desert Tan Base
- Wood: Umbral Umber
- Stone: Trollblood Highlight
I mention the two coats on the primer and skin as I wanted to note that I was somewhat disappointed with the lack of solid foundation that I got with these guys. I found the German Red Brown worked really well on the Warmachine models, but the Desert Tan Base on the Ogres not so much. I had heard that this Surface Primer sometimes does not cover well on plastics, so I shouldn’t have been surprised. In the end, no big deal, I just had to add an extra layer each, which only added time to the project, and not much else. When painting the rest of Ogres, if I ever have a chance to spray prime them (in white), I will, just to save some time and effort.
And speaking of effort, is it just me, or is ‘speed painting’ hard to accomplish? I was planning on ‘speed painting’ these guys, but I guess I ended up being too sloppy for that, with all of the touch-ups I had to go back and do. That’s not the only reason these guys took long (variety of winter ills went through the family the past two weeks), but I am wondering how people get entire units done in hours using the ‘Army Painter method.’ Good on them!
Lessons for next time: First, leave the gutplates off and paint them separately. That’s the biggest one. I’ll have to wait until their dipped to learn anything else, like how dark the Glorious Gold and Ryn Flesh will turn with the dip. Hopefully both will get dark enough, as one is quite shiney and the other very pale. The gold looked fine on my Khador ‘jacks after the Devlan Mud wash, and I hear that Army Painter’s Strong Tone has a similar look to it. We shall see!
I’m not exactly sure when I’ll get the unit dipped. I need to do so in a well-ventilated area, so I’ll have to wait until it’s not too cold outside that I can open the garage door and do it there. Hopefully that’s soon!
Until then, the second half of my goal for the month is to finish building the models for a 1600pt list. Now, what list that is and how many models it requires is still up in the air. I did build a 1500pt list to face Ray’s Vampire Counts the other day. I might be working on a batrep for that one, so you may or may not see the outcome at some point. Anyway, so technically I need a few more models to be built to reach my goal. I think I can get them done soon, as there aren’t too many.
Tonight, though, I’m going to get back to those objectives that I am halfway finished. Maybe I can get them done by the end of the weekend?
