For weeks i have been rattling on about the terrain i want to build for Bolt Action as [elg] doesn’t have any specific World War II terrain, well I started it. It began when Nick offered to give me the remnants of the [elg] terrain materials as he is moving house and doesn’t have the space to carry it. So I acquired a bin bag full of sheets of 1” pink foam and sheets of foam board. I have been making weekly visits to the local £1 store to see if they have anything that could be useful for building terrain and this week I found this great garden edging set. It was 1 metre long and consisted of what can only be called 28mm scale logs.
I set about the sniffing using some glue and after a little incident when the glue sprayed me in the face I was left with the following creation.
A little cutting with an old kitchen knife and some gentle use of a sanding block and I was left with nice sloped edges on the tiles. The gaps were filled in with poly filler and some craters cut in the surface to give the looked of an area bombardment. As you can see the wooden rods were perfect for creating supports and cross beams for the trench, add in the coffee stirrers as planks and the trench is taking shape.
This is the point I forgot to take pictures at but essentially I covered the foam board in poly filler to help create a more solid surface to game on, this was then coated in two layers of sand. Then I sat for a while and watched Kellys Heroes again as I needed inspiration and was trying to remember what colours the boards at [elg] are painted, after a little trip to 6s2hit store for a latte and some paint and I started to paint. Once I started it just kind of worked out all I have left to do now is add the flock to make it match existing boards and perhaps some scorch marks on the craters edges.
The end result will be 3 tile side at approximately 33 inches length so that on a 4 x 4 board they will cover most of a deployment. I am going to build separate tank traps that can be added to the battle field as scatter terrain and the same with barbed wire. I am hoping to build some sort of bunker complex to represent a take and hold objective. Basically I have far too many ideas on what I want to do.
