Christmas and New Year's Eve have past. I don't know for Santa but GW this year gave us the Digital Advert Calender. As everyone knows, it was a digital release from 1/12/13 to 25/12/13, containing 25 small novels to read and 25 books about the game from Escalation to Kill Team. Included in this release were 6 Dataslates. A Dataslate is a Formation that doesn't count in your normal FOC but provides an extra Ally chart. These Dataslates are:

Be'lakor, the Dark Master

Profile   WS  BS  S  T  W  I  A  LD  SV  TYPES
Be'lakor  9   5   6  5  4  8  5  10  -   Flying MC

Be'lakor is the first Daemon prince that ever existed. It costs 350P and has the Special Rules:
Daemon, Eternal Warrior, Fearless, Psyker (ML 3 and knows all the powers from the Telepathy discipline table), Shadow Form (gives him ++4, shrouded and passes automatically all dangerous tests) and Lord of Torment (when an enemy unit fails a Morale test, Be'lakor gains D3 Warp charge). Also Be'lakor has the Blade of Shadows that gives S +1 AP 2 Armourbane, Fleshbane and Master-crafted. Be'lakor can be taken as an HQ choice from either Codex: Chaos Daemons or Codex: Chaos Space Marines. Be'lakor isn't more powerful than an ordinary Daemon Prince, especially if one considers the 350P it costs. But if you underestimate him, it will eat all your marines.

Eldar Ghost Warriors

This formation consists of 1 Wraithknigth, 2 Wraithlord and 3 units of Wraithguard or Wraitblade and can be taken only from Codex: Eldar. By being in this formation these units get the Special Rules: Desperate Measures (all eldar models within 6" of the formation get the Hatred SR) and Wraithbone Wall (when a friendly unit takes a cover save from a model of the formation, it takes a +4 cover save instead of a +5). The cheapest this formation can be is 960P. The  downside of the formation is that the Wraithguard and Wraitblade can't take a Dedicate Transport, and the Wraithlord can't be a considered a reliable solution. To spend around 1000P for a formation in your 1850P army means that you are aiming for a heavy wraith army. By screening your formation with a unit of Wraitblade using the forceshield that gives them a ++4, along with the high T that the formation has and the Psychic powers you'll get from your HQ it won't be difficult to cross the battlefield and wipe out everything.

Tau Firebase Support Cadre
The Tau Dataslate is perhaps the most powerful; as you acquire 1 Riptide and 6 Broadsides - a must for every Tau army - that get the Tank Hunter!!! as well as a Preferred Enemy (Space Marines). When playing against Space Marines they get Hatred against the Tau Firebase Support Cadre. Starting with 580P and reaching up to 1000P, the Tau Firebase is the solution Tau players were searching to counteract the AV 13-14. I don't think there are a lot of things to say here, the Tau took another boost (they didn't need) for their army. The way to go here, is to try, by all means, to assault them.

Reclusiam Command Squad

The first of two Dataslates GW gave to Codex: Space Marines in an effort to try and boost them, as the codex isn't as strong as many hoped it will be. This Formation contains 1 Chaplin, 1 Command Squad (that must have a Apothecary, a Company Champion and a Company Standard carrier) and a Razorback. All of them, without any upgrades, cost 290. If one adds +25P for the formation the total
cost goes up to 315P and gives 2 Special Rules: Crusader and Relentless Zeal (until the Chaplin dies, the Formation can re-roll misses of close combat). I don't believe this formation can do the trick for the Space Marines. For 315P, especially considering the extra 25P, I has expecting something more. A wolf Guard pack for 200P can take them easily and quickly.

Adeptus Astartes Storm Wing

The second Dataslate for the Codex: Space Marines is better than the previous one. The Storm Wing has 1 Stormraven and 2 Stormtalons. This Formation gives the Space Marine Player the air superiority he needs to take control of the airspace. The Special Rules that they get are: Escort craft
(you roll one dice for reserve for all three planes) and Data Lance (gives +1 BS when shooting anything else other than a flyer). For 420P - 520P this is a very good option, if you want to rain fire on your opponents. The biggest advantage is that all the planes come in the same round; you can secure this by taking an Aegis with a Comms Relay to re-roll reserve rolls.

Cypher – Lord of the Fallen

Profile   WS  BS  S  T  W  I  A  LD  SV  TYPES
Cypher    7   10  4  4  3  8  3  10  3+   INF

As the Digital Advert Calender began it also ended with a Dataslate of a Character. This one applies to all Power Armour Codices, except for the Dark Angels. Cypher has very good stats. Though, you won't pick him for his stats, but rather for his Special Rules. He has ATSKNF, Fleet, Hit&Run, Infiltrate, Blazing Weapons (he can shoot with both his pistols and run, or the opposite, and in close combat has half his attack round-down at S7 AP2), Divine Protection (When Cypher dies if no enemy unit is in D6" near him he doesn't award VP), Never Forgive (any Dark Angel, on the table, with the Inner Circle SR will also gain the Zealot SR) and Shadowy Herald of Strife (Cypher cannot be taken as a Warlord, plus your Warlord suffers a -1LD). Cypher's equipment are a Bolt pistol with Range 16" and a 'no Get Hot' Plasma Pistol. Also he has the Cypher Sword that grands him the Shrouded and Eternal Warrior SR. He can also be in a formation, named Fallen Champions, but only for the Codex: Chaos Space Marines. Fallen Champions consist of Cypher along with 1-3 units of Chosen, which if they are 12" near Cypher they get his LD, Infiltrate and ATSKNF, but they cannot take any Chaos rewards, Artefacts, Marks and Dedicate Transports.
Cypher is a good choice for every assault and shooting unit because of his Infiltrate and Hit&Run. The best way to use him is with a unit of Centurions with Grav-guns and a Chapter Master in a bike to shock the wounds. Of course there are many ways to use him, even a fully loaded unit of Wolf Guards or Thunderwolves can use his SR.

Space Wolves using Dataslate

From all these Dataslates, our forgotten from GW codex can take only Cypher in his Primary Detachment. Space Wolves can use him to deploy a unit near the enemy or to force the opponent to widespread his deployment. One is for sure, these Dataslates give the player more ways to play his/her army and allies.

Until next time remember Prospero and…
