Clan Strife is new to the Wargate, but we're starting to have a lot of fun with it! The Ronin ruleset is very flexible, and we've been able to add a lot of material on the Clan Strife blogspot. We're setting up some nifty project logs to go along with this, but the upcoming RPG games set in the Emerald Empire are sure to generate a lot of enthusiasm!
We like to layer our games with as much narrative as possible, and we had our eye on the Legend of the Five Rings setting for a while. We've got a lot of the D20 material, but we've also been collecting 4th Edition of the popular eastern fantasy RPG. Later this year, Skim will be taking us to Rokugan to explore the realm in greater detail.
Using Clan Strife in conjunction with Legend of the Five Rings will help us get to grips with the extremely large world and massive background. We're going to have fun going through all the minutiae that make Rokugan it's own living, breathing setting. There's even talk of pan-chapter RPG sessions.
Now, on to the point. We have been talking lately about having multiple game levels for our settings, and how they work into the club. For instance, we have Clan Strife (a miniature skirmish game) and Legend of the Five Rings (a roleplaying game). Those two games are in the same setting, and complement each other well. One allows us to fight hordes of samurai, the other allows us to explore the fictional lives of those samurai.
Eventually, our narrative in Rokugan will converge, and both games will be in season. We're going to be doing this more often from now on, as it's very rare that an RPG game coincides with it's miniature wargame counterpart in the club's schedule. However, this level of involvement will only be possible with everyone's cooperation, otherwise we'll be rather limited to only a few settings. The major shift will be to impose harder time limits on certain RPG games - they will have to lock up with the wargame at some point. Look for this to change in the next few seasons as we wrestle with those time constraints.
Tomorrow is a big Game Day! We'll be visiting both Rokugan and the Imperium, so make sure you're well rested. Bring your katana, and be ready to draw at a moment's notice. The tides of fate are choppy on the Isle of Lies.
