Maybe I need to dream bigger, but I've long-dreamed of having a game table of my own at home.

Now that we've got a basement that I can use, I am happy to say that a buddy of mine came over and we built a table top to use for gaming.

The goal of the project was to build a 6' by 4' frame that could hold interchangeable foam pieces or Realm of Battle tiles.  It would rest on a folding table that could be used for other things when not needed for gaming.  The table top needed to be movable with a bit of effort: I wanted to be able to lean it against a wall without too much trouble, but I wouldn't be moving it daily, either.

We started by building the outside frame using 2" by 4"s.  The long lengths are 6'3" long, and the shorts pieces are 4' long.  The lumber came from Home Depot, and they even did all the cuts for us.

Next came the cross sections, each also 4' long.

They are positioned at the ends, in a foot, in two feet, and in the center.

We also added some guide pieces underneath the center cross section, to prevent sliding sideways.

(As you can see, the dog supervised.)

When completed, it fit six sections from the Realm of Battle tiles perfectly.

The cross section pieces, flush along the bottoms of the side rails, allow much of the tile sections to set beneath a lip.  Handy for dice rolling!

Loaded up for the inaugural game, which I lost.

The view from the ork side of the board.

All told, lumber and screws cost $25.00.  The table was a bit under $40.00  I think a longer table would be a little more stable, but we played without any trouble at all with it as is.

A pretty easy project, really.

Next up, of course, are custom foam inserts and all the other terrain accoutrements.
