Well, it happened faster than I expected; Fantasy Flight has released their Forgotten Souls Co-op expansion for Descent for print-on-demand. I have already ordered mine, and it should be here by Friday.
I’ve read through the rules for the scenario, which have been released for free, and I think this sounds fantastic. Truly, this looks to be an excellent adaptation of the Descent rule-set for people who:
A. like cooperative play
B. crave a bit more of a traditional dungeon crawl, since this expansion generates a map gradually and randomly
C. have few opportunities to play Descent with others
I will give a full session report when I receive mine, but I want to bring up a few niggling details that I can already tell are going to be issues for me (hey, I’m a gamer, I have issues…)
1. Lack of enemy variety. There are only 4 enemy types in this scenario, and it seems like that could have been improved. Just make alternate cards. It seems a shame that it doesn’t utilize the full range of enemies in the base box.
2. No lieutenants/agents. Again, this is a bummer.
3. Why not more? Seriously, these things are a brilliant adaptation, putting out only 2 a year seems like a shame. I know that I’d buy a whole box of these as a large expansion were FFG to put one out.
They have such a great rules engine and endless components in the form of heroes, monsters and liutenants, not to mention room tiles to explore–I would be anxious to be finding all sorts of ways of adding new excuses for my customer base to buy them, and these co-op expansions are just the ticket! If the Pathfinder card game can put out a campaign a month, so can FFG!
