Is Battletech a board game or a war game?

Perhaps both?

One of the action points that I have been trying to push and hold myself to in my games is the realism of immersion. Fully painted and based mechs, felt or textured battle mats, and now some damage/smoke tokens.

I wanted to model up a dozen or so smoke markers so when an energy or explosive shot misses a mech a smoke token can be placed next to it to simulate the explosive miss, and likewise when a mech goes nova it can be flipped over and smoke marked.

(I’m also working on some blast craters, and we’ll get to them next…)

Quick and easy smoke:

Grab some small pieces of cotton- either cosmetic balls or pillow/fiber stuffing and pull it out to shape it.

Glue it to a base- could be round cardboard, or in my case a few spare Warhammer 40K infantry bases.

Dust them with black spray paint so the white cotton core can be seen underneath.

Dry brush or dab paint some red at the base to simulate flames.

Done.
