So Cally Carnage is fast approaching and I’m in the last phase of preparations for my first tournament with the Empire and so with that in mind I have finished my unit of 12 Inner circle knights with great weapons. I have really tried my best to raise my painting standards with this army and I think this unit has come out how I wanted. I treated each model as a character (which they are lol) and spend 10+ hours each model. I think it has come off really well and is probably the best unit I have ever painted.
I have cheekily inserted my Painting Challenge Nurgle Chaos Lord model as a unit filler. I wanted to try and make the unit “filler tell a story” like how Steve Wren described in his HeelanHammer interview with his basing. Byron Orde also does some similar with his interlocking scenic basing. I haven’t reached that level but I think it does fit in as a swirling combat. I have tried to set up so that it looks like the knights are rushing to support a once isolated Valten, charging past to prevent dastardly Chaos warriors from interfering with the challenge. Speaking of which one knight with a great weapon has been posed to look like he is about to have a cheeky swing at the nurgle lord as he rides past! I think the unit looks like it is charging at speed which I am quite happy with.
I may in the future paint up an army of warriors posed similarly rushing to meet the knights in a similar colour scheme to Nurgle Chaos lord.
I do think that the unit filler is a bit too large going forward and would work better on a 50x50 but for now I am happy. As this is my first unit filler and first completed empire unit please let me know what you guys think. Will be starting the daunting project of painting 80 halberds to the same standard soon and want to know if people think the paint scheme works before I lose a silly number of hours on the project lol!
