This project has been one of the more demanding commissions I’ve tackled recently. I’m sure many of you will recognise the original inspiration for the project as those made by David DE ABREU and full credit to him for the concept and execution of turning Centurions into Obliterators. I remember being blown away by the quality of the work (and paintjob) when I first saw them.
The brief for the commission was to make a close approximation to the originals but with some alterations and a more Chaos Undivided look, rather than Slaanesh themed.
The basis of the models is obviously the Space Marine Centurions, with a whole host of parts from the Helbrute kit. The biggest deviation from the inspiration is the larger shoulder pads. I knew right from the outset I wanted to change this, as using the Centurion pads just kept them too close to their original Centurion outline. At first I tried building up the pads in Greenstuff, even going so far as to cast 3 pairs of them, but then I realised that the Helbrutes shoulder pads were a perfect match for what I was trying to scratch build.
I can’t claim credit for much of the actual design itself as that goes to David De Abreu and the client himself who provided multiple drawings and sketches.
As usual the majority of the sculpting work was done with a 50:50 mix of Magic Sculp and Greenstuff. I do experiment with these ratios a bit but I always tend to come back to that ratio. I really should try experimenting with other epoxy mediums but I tend to be the kind of person who sticks with what works. What I really like about this mix is that I can scrape and carve the cured putty afterwards so I get a chance to clean up mistakes. It also blends very nicely into whatever surface it’s applied to.
I have a 360 degree video for these models. Moving forward the videos will be my main format for showing off any new work. I’m still getting used to using video, but I’m very pleased with how things are going so far. I post these to youtube first, so subscribing there is a good way to see updates to the portfolio.
