What a month this is for the hobby front – unusual load of work is prohibiting me from making significant leaps in completion however I did find some time to spare on my models the past weekend. Without further ado jump in to see what I’ve been up to lately.
Lychguard
Slower progress here than I like, but it’s a kind of closure I feel after I put down the brush. I completed the metal-work on the shields and weapon arms for the lot and tried my chances at adding a red hue to the golds. Thinking that the paint was too thin to show any difference it seems I rushed the shades on the gold and it left a gash on the switch from shaded gold to highlight gold. Tried to fix it with heavily thinned Shining Gold (Lahmian Medium is your friend) and below is the result. I think I’ll try to ease the transition a little by trying the method once more without dabbing the wash on the crevices and work my way up towards a brighter gold by mixing in Runefang Steel to the blend in the highlights (thanks to Deniz for the suggestion!)
Let me also add that I’m never using water with metallic paints again. Makes them too unpredictable for my taste. Use a medium instead!
Space Hulk Genestealers
I had to start paint on these guys, the temptation was too strong. Besides it will allow me and friends to game with the models earlier and considering my usual pace this is a GREAT idea. Nothing too exciting however, as I’ve only applied the basecoat of the most prominent color, blue. I used Kantor Blue, thinned, in 3-4 coats. It’s a surprisingly strong color but I wanted to make sure the application was as smooth as it gets. After all, the first lesson in painting is to THIN YOUR PAINTS.
Next up will be skin and metals basecoat, followed by their appropriate washes.
Nemesis Busts
Something new to the fold, but this was meant as a filler during my downtime between e-mailing with the US for work. I’ve cleaned up the two new Imperial agents, the Stormtrooper and the Eversor Assassin as well as Moarn Goreheart in preparation for priming. What I can immediately say about the material is that it’s surprisingly similar to resin in terms of resistance to the blade but when you try to scrape away mould lines the material can slip under your angled blade. This means you have to use careful cutting motion to eliminate casting residue from the pieces. The Assassin and the Berserker didn’t give me much trouble but fixing the miscasts on the Stormtrooper gave me nightmares – and after a few botched attempts at fixing the grenades I gave up for the time. Will have to get back to it at a later time. And I cannot even dare to imagine what awaits me with Luxuria and Specimen X as they have nasty mould lines. Oh well.
Lastly, without visuals I’ve arranged a few blocks in my newly acquired Feldherr case for the Space Hulk models. I want to write a full review on this and show the capabilities of the raster in that so stay tuned for that if you’re interested.
That’s all for this week. I expect that the next update will be of similar depth but who knows – if I get lucky and find more time then I really want to finish off the Necrons and move on to even more exciting stuff. And with more exciting stuff I open this part of the content to you! I mentioned in my previous post I’ll have a poll on several mediums (including this blog) showing 5 options among my WIP list for the next progression towards a showcase – the time has come for this selection and here are the choices for the next series:
And here a gallery of minis from their store images, for visual help, in order:
The two highest ranked minis (so we have a little variety once the decision is made) will have priority posting on the blog for your viewing pleasure and will reach showcase status.
So, what are you waiting for? Get voting!
