Today's post is all about the Judge Dredd miniature game. Originally this game was solely produced by Mongoose Publishing (current producers of the traveler sci-fi RPG), but now they have teamed up with Warlord Games (Bolt Action), to help grow the game and increase production. Now I personally missed out on the chance to join the kickstarter, but secretly I'm glad of this. My reason for feeling this way is simple; since Warlord Games got involved the speed of service and quality of the casts have increased ten fold.

So where do you begin with a game like this, I hear you ask......Well look no further than the Starter Set

Classic Dredd cracking heads.

Here is the Warlord Game blurb about the set:

"This set contains everything you need to start partolling the streets and fighting crime in Mega-City One. It includes the full hard book, two opposing forces- the Mega-City Judges and the rampaging Street Gang, two exclusive figures, only available in this set, and the Academy of Law Training Guide, that will get you playing in minutes!"

Sounding good so far, now to the actual contents.
Great value for money set.
The set contains:
  • The Judge Dredd Miniatures Game Rulebook
  • 8 Mega-City Judges inc. 2 Cadets, 2 Riot Judges, 1 Specialist Judge, 1 Psi-Judge and 2 Street Judges.
  • 8 Street Gangers inc. 1 Heavy Spitgun, 5 armed with pistols, 1 armed with a club, 1 Psi Juve.
  • 1 Exclusive Judge armed with a Lawrod
  • 1 Exculsive Female Punk Leader with Dual Pistols.

(Note: Models may need cleaning and are unpainted)
  • Academy of Law Training Guide.

This set gives you an amazing saving in costs. At only a £75 buy in price, you save £15 when compared to buying the Rulebook (£30-), Street Gang (£30-) and Judges Box set (£30-) separately.
Totaling £90 before you add in the two exclusive figures too, which would average £5 each as singles. So with that all in mind that is a grand total saving of £25, nearly another gang box set. Downside to this kit, is no ruler and no dice. Okay I know most gamers own these already, but some of the newer gamers may not have D10 hanging around. It just seems a strange choice to not include them. But that's the only downside for me. The book is of high quality, fully coloured artwork and photos and is hardback, rules are quick and easy to pick up. Was able to play a simple after reading the Academy of Law guide.
The figures themselves are a great quality, made from white metal and the packaging is just pure eye candy, featuring art work from 2000ad. Downside is scale, for the most part 90-95% of the figure range is of a similar scale, but then you randomly get a figure that was sculpted larger. Not sure why, would imagine it's either an old sculpt or a different modeler. They are also what I would call heroic scale, so if have the original GW figures you will definitely notice a difference in scale.

If your a Judge Dredd fan, than I can't stress enough how much you need to try this game. It's also a great fix for those who enjoyed Necromunda back in the day.

Out of 5 I would give it a 4, if it had come with dice and a ruler it would most likely get the full 5! (this score I still stand by a few years later, I have had little to no problems when playing this game)

And this is were I'm finishing the product review for now. I will be back with rulebook picks and a chat about Blood on the Streets supplement for the game soon. As always drop me a comment, have you played this game?
