I’ve been meaning to purchase some new 40k stuff. Especially those amazing new custodes models.
But I already have so many models to paint. And I don’t want to buy stuff and then not paint it. I have a pretty limited budget so I want to make sure I don’t impulse buy any models.
In the last month I picked up:
- 9 Legion of the Damned
- 1 Sergeant Centurius (out of print – got him from eBay)
- Primus Medicae
- a ton of paint
- The Horus Heresy – Legiones Astartes: Age of Darkness Army List (on iBooks)
In models it’s only 11 new models but it costs a ton ($250+) and I want to make sure I’m making the most of my money.
Setting Expectations
I have a few things that need to be painted. These new Legion of the Damned are for a local Kill Team which will happen mid January. So they (including Sergeant Centurius) are first on the list.
Then my Thunderfire Cannon & Techmarine which are 80% painted and just need a few finishing touches.
And then I want to paint that plastic Contemptor Dreadnought from The Horus Heresy Betrayal at Calth.
And then I really want to paint those HQ Command Tanks. I got them from Nottingham 1.5 years ago and I’ve been too busy doing other things to assemble & play with them. I love unique models so I’ve committed to doing them.
Kanban Board
I’ve put all of my projects into a kanban (Trello) board. That way I can track everything. It’s easy to forget minis we’ve purchased. Especially the one off minis like the Primus Medicae. I hope with a bit more organization I can keep my self motivated to finish models.
Reward
That’s 12 models & 3 vehicles. It’s a lot of work for sure. A typical squad can take me weeks and a single rhino make take longer so it’s definitely a lot of work for me. But if I paint with a goal in mind and if I do some smart batching (ex. building the command tanks at the same time) I think I can get it done.
I have some work trips coming up and I plan to bring & paint models on those trips.
If I can finish these models I’ll reward myself by getting custodes. I’ll likely 5 custodes & one of the Forge World vehicles. I’ll also get the upcoming Inferno book for Horus Heresy from Forge World.
