After a couple of months off from painting (life, work and others hobbies got in the way) I've returned to my table and my High Elves! With the new Dark Elves book out I need to get going with my Asur and throw those Druchii dogs back into the sea!
With that in mind I thought I'd show off my Loremaster, from the build to the final model and the inspiration behind certain details and decisions.

I knew I wanted to build my own Loremaster so with that in mind I went through my bits box(es) putting together a fairly static yet dynamic model....it'll make sense when you see the pictures. It had to have a lion cloak and I already knew what head I wanted to use but beyond that, anything was game. I tried flaming swords, staffs, wands, orbs, swirling clouds of mystical origins and more besides. In the end I decided to tell the story of a white lion who has developed a connection to the winds of magic which means no fancy robes, no great swords and essentially, no ties to Hoeth and their fancy school.

It came from the Bits Box!
Something's missing......
Fire! That's what's missing!
I wanted my Loremaster to have a distant, imposing feel and ended up with a solid, fairly static pose but with lots of movement around him, suggesting a swirling vortex of magic. I selected parts that had trinkets or charms on them to really push the mage aspect. Adding flames to the axe was the final touch and really took this from a guy holding a book to a LOREMASTER!!!....because you know....flaming axe.....never mind....

So the model was built, done and done! Then I remembered I love Transformers and that took up all my time......

When I finally got back to the painting table I knew I wanted him to fit with my army's scheme but have a few points of interest to really make him *pop*.

He's been watching too much TV.....

A pair of rusty keys hang from his waist but to what?
A ghostly axe conjured into being
Standard issue lion cloak and shoulder pad
Forbidden lore!
Done and done! I wanted to pay attention to certain details on the model, the rusty keys, the dark runes and bloody hand in the book, the baleful gaze, the ghostly axe (inspired by the Bound weapons from Skyrim), the red gem in his ring (Ruby Ring? Ring of Khaine maybe?) and the gold trim on the pages of the book and his teal scarf thing......

All of this leaves me with a model with lots to tell if you look carefully and plenty of character too!

Maybe I invest too much in my models, be it building, painting or the story behind certain details but for a fluffy gamer like myself it's excellent and leaves me with a group of characters with a story to tell rather than an army of toys soldiers.
