I was thinking about a new list. The concept was to find something new to use in a game and then it hit me: ThunderHawk Assault. I didn’t try to find the cheesiest list the Space Wolves can have with the ThunderHawk, but one that it will be fun to play with. What is the most thrilling thing in the 6th ed? But of course assault. With all that firepower that the new Codices have, we rarely see assaults. So I made my list based on that and who better to lead the army other than Logan Grimnar.

The fluff behind the list is that a patrolling Grey Hunters squad gets locked down in an area. The enemy is approaching and their only hope lies with Support. So they are behind the barricade - they were barely able to build - and are trying to communicate with their ship on Orbit via the Comms Relay. They finally get through to their ship and a ThunderHawk is dispatched.

+++ ThunderHawk Assault (1850pts) +++
Codex: Space Wolves Selections:

+ HQ +
    * Logan Grimnar

+ Troops +
    * Grey Hunters Pack
        * 5x Grey Hunter

    * Wolf Guard Pack (Troops)
        Cyclone Missile Launcher
        * Arjac Rockfist
        * 9x Terminator Armour
            5x Combi Plasma, Heavy Flamer, 2x Power Axe, 4x Power Fist, 3x Power Sword, Storm               Bolter, 2x Storm Shield

+ Lords of War +
    * ThunderHawk Gunship
        6x ThunderHawk Cluster Bombs, Turbo-laser Destructor

Fortifications (Fortification) Selections:
   * Aegis Defence Line

The tactic here is simple. Keep your Grey Hunters safe behind the Aegis and hope to survive until the ThunderHawk arrives. The first role of the Aegis is to have a re-roll on your reserve rolls. So when your second turn comes you will have to make a 3+ roll with reroll. After that you have 2 things that can punch through anything. You have:

1.       A powerful melee squad of:
·         2 Wolf Guards with Storm Shields and Power fists
·         2 Wolf Guards with combi-plasmas and  Power fists
·         3 Wolf Guards with combi-plasmas and power swords
·         1 Wolf Guard with Heavy Flamer and Power Axe
·         1 Wolf Guard with Storm Bolter, Power Axe and Cyclone Missile Launcher
·         Arjac Rockfist
·         Logan Grimnar
2.       The mighty ThunderHawk with :
·         6x ThunderHawk Cluster Bombs(Range - S 6 AP 4 Heavy 6, Apocalyptic Blast, One Use Only)
·         2x Lascannon
·         4x Sponsor-mounted Twin-linked Heavy
·         Turbo-laser Destructor (Range 96” S D AP 2 Large Blast)

Any enemy will find it difficult to bring down this army. The only downsides of the list are that you have to survive with the GH squad until the ThunderHawk arrives and the ThunderHawk’s low AV (12 front & side and 10 rear).

A fun list, but sadly I don’t think I will ever be able to try it, because of the actual cost of a ThunderHawk. I found the ThunderHawk in Forge World for £399.00. I believe that for a model, even of that size, it’s a bit too pricy. As always if anyone has the chance to use the list, please provide feedback. Of course I would like to hear your opinion on this and all my previous posts, as well as suggestions for what you would like me to write about.
