Let me pretext this article by saying that we don’t hate 7thedition 40k, nor are we looking to “jump on the wagon” as one of our ‘readers’ told us. So in saying that, let me move onto the topic of how we got started in X-Wing.

It’s strange to be seeing Star Wars on a blog named after 40k, but the reality is we cover a number of different gaming systems here, and we have just added one more! By now you should have heard of X-Wing. A number of different blogs have been writing content on it, and I’m sure your local gaming store will stock the game, or at least have a small circle of followers. Here is our story: Optimus Prime Time and I went to SPAWN (the local gaming club at a bar) off the whim of a few beers. We didn’t have much with us in the way of models, so we went with the intention of trying out Infinity. However, when we arrived, we realised that the majority of the players at the club were playing X-Wing. I decided to try it out, and within ten minutes of giving it a go, I was addicted! I relayed the rules to OPT in about 15 minutes (literally the rules are that simple). There is no huge 200 page rulebook, it is just pure simple fun and tactics.

Hilariously, the next day we had our 40k tournament, and in the downtime between rounds I told Spicerack about the game. He, being a HUGE Star Wars fiend, was on it. Three days later and all three of us have squadrons. TommyH is just getting into it also, and one of our other mates has been pulled into it to. It really is fun. It’s relatively cheap to get into, and if you manage to find a mate who wants to go the opposite faction to you, grab the starter set. It comes with all the rules, templates and dice you need.

Will it replace 40k? No. Will it replace Fantasy? No. Will it replace LOTR? No. Will we have fun playing it? Yes. The great part about the game is that you can carry it around in your back pack, or leave it in your draw at work. I don’t know much about the organised X-Wing scene here in Sydney, however I believe it has a rapidly expanding following. I heard on the beardvine that The Combat Company (a valuable retailer for Australians) ran a 16 man tournament not long ago, so we will definitely be checking out that scene. Until then though, my Rebel fleet will continue to blast Spicerack’s Empire. I’m heading out to buy the Rebel Transport today, which i’ve nicknamed “the bus” to increase the character in our games. Give it a few months and we will be playing 500 vs 500 point space battles! Hopefully the Imperial fleet gets a Huge ship soon so we can include the Corvette as well. Until then though....

Check it out!
