So I have been asked a lot about how I did the basing on my OrcOgre army and thought I would do a wee tutorial on what I did. It's actually all very simple and I use bet cheap and easy materials :) plan for basing an army to take a week of true time but in reality you could do an army worth of bases in an hour a night. Links are below to materials that I used or are the same :)

Materials:
Ballast/Sand: EBay, the beach... Sand Ballast
PVA Glue (BnQ decorators pva)
Medium rocks... Er a driveway or path Medium Rocks
Slate... Drive ways, roundabouts, gardens, paths... Slate
Tufts: variety of army painter(element games) Tufts
Flowers/Heather: Flowers/Heather
Brown paint Brown Paint
Brown spray paint (Plastikote chocolate brown) Plastikote Spray
Small rocks 5mm Rocks Small Rocks 5mm
Green moss Small Green Moss Tufts
Hardcore epoxy glue. Glue
Wash (black/brown)

Tools
Plastic tray for mixing
Palette for pva glue
Sharp knife
Tweezers
Tea spoon

Stage 1
Mix pva glue, sand, small rocks and brown paint to an amorphous consistency (semi liquid which can be moved but will not flow off the edges of the base). The reason for the brown paint is to make it better stick to plastic/resin bases. Ignore this if your base is MDF (sarrissa precision for example). Spread on the base using the tea spoon, moulding with the thin handle end if required. Push in some medium rocks or slate to add height or variance to the base.

Allow this to dry for 24 hours. It will set like concrete and can be used to build up a layered base or piece of terrain. Do this last thing at night and come back to it the following night.

Stage 2
Straight forward, spray brown liberally with the chocolate brown plastikote spray. Allow to dry for a few hours.

Stage 3
Rapidly brush the base with pva glue mixed with brown paint. This acts as sealant to the base preventing it from peeling. The total mixture sets as hard as concrete but it is quite brittle! Let this set for another 24 hours.

Optional!
You can sprinkle more sand at this stage while the glue paint sets to give your bases a rougher/finer finish.

Stage 4
The base is now ready to be fixed to a model. I would use a powerful epoxy glue to bond the model to base. Depending on the glue this could take a long time to set.

Stage 5
Dry brush/quickly paint the base a lighter colour than the under coat.

Stage 6
Wash the base with brown (soil) or black (rock). Allow to dry for an hour or two.

Stage 7
Dry brush a light colour lightly.

Stage 8
Using pva glue bond each of the basing materials. A dab per item will be sufficient. Allow to dry for 6 hours.

Stage 9
Paint the edges black, done :)
