- Allies/Fortifications, according to the FOC, optional. So TOs can feel free to leave them out without shouts of anyone "comping" or changing the core game because they're not part of the core game, they're simply options, much like campaigns and all the narrative ideas spread throughout the book.
- Psychic powers are FUN! Wow, this was surprising. I didn't expect the awesome fun to be had throwing psychic powers around.
- Psychic powers can't be stopped. Well, buffs can't be. Only powers that target your unit can you attempt to Deny. If you have a Psychic Hood within 6" of that unit, then your Librarian can try to Deny the power. Gone are the days of the 24" roll off - I'm assuming the current army books will be FAQd to limit the range of Hoods and Runic Weapons.
- Vehicles stink. I think GW went too far the other way on this one. Glancing a dread to death with a Skimmer is too easy. Well, it's the light tanks that stink, honestly....
- Land Raiders could be better, I didn't play against any, but Skimmers are pretty amazing. The 5+ jink is so much more survivable than even a Rhino right now that's is almost silly.
- Overwatch is AWESOME. Damn, shooting a Swarmlord with a rocket on the way in was sweet. However...
- He failed his charged....TWICE. Great for me, not so much for him.
- Flamers are now AMAZING. They auto hit models on Overwatch. Devastating. We saw a swarm of bugs Charge a squad of Dark Angels get roasted down to three bugs. Yea, not much of a charge left.
- All this really makes the game feel like a shooting game. Combat is tough to pull off, tough to use effectively and the results aren't always worth the effort.
Overall, the game feels MUCH smoother than 5th. It flows nicely and I can see how the games are going to be quicker as a result. Even with our constant flipping through the rulebook, the game had a nice feel and it wasn't long before we were just enjoying ourselves.
For our games, by the way, we FAQd ourselves and limited our Hoods/Runics to the 6" bubble in the new rulebook. It gave us a better feel for what the game is like and really let us enjoy the breadth of psychic powers on hand (which are FUN!).
Lastly, that short edge deployment zone is never getting used. Why not come up with a better one GW? No one uses it in Fantasy, why would they use in 40k? It's not that it's a bad idea, but TOs can't fit that deployment zone into their events. It's too inconvenient.
Edit: FAQs are up. All profiles are taken from the BRB now, so everyone gets Flakk Missiles which will allow most armies to have some sort of AA weapons. The Hoods were cut down now, but I don't see a mention of Runic weapons, which make Wolves the kings of anti-psykers.
