Before I go all crazy on Matt I want to be clear; Matt seems like a nice person, dedicated to 40k, helping to build a strong community in his area. With that said, what crack is he smoking and where can I get some? Let us start with obvious.

The title of the blog: Black Matt’s Black Legion. First off Matt is neither black, nor does his armies lists have any resemblance to the Black Legion. Let us start with the fact that Matt is white. Now I know some Northern whites might think race is behind us, but as demonstrated by the media obsession over the recent Beer Summit and I think Stelek summed Matt’s nickname up pretty well,

Woah, back the train up. I was merely asking if ‘Black Matt’ was actually black, or another kiddie with a ‘cool’ name. I wasn’t being sarcastic. Putting black in your moniker is bad form in my view, it’s akin to virtual blackface.
Hope that clears that up. 🙂

It is common knowledge that a nickname is never cool when you make it up yourself, especially one so racially charged. Then, there is the rest of the title, Black Legion blog. When you display front and center that your primary army comes in two flavors pure Khorne or Lash then, it is not Black Legion. I always thought running a Black Legion is about using Abaddon and Undivided Chaos Marines? There are ways to make a competitive list with Abaddon, besides Lash is soooo 4th edition. To fix this, I have a few blog name suggestions.

  1. Cheese dick armies pretending to have a theme: average painting blog
  2. A transformitive guide from 40k hobby player to souless competitive player
  3. Finding excuses to talk to yourself using unedited video, no shame blog

Then we have this.

Besides the degenerate yawn fest about his army. We get to my biggest gripe. Matt is not a great enough painter to be boasting. I feel like I am looking at painting techniques that are so 2001. I see no real blending, nor variation on the metals. Then, there is the showcase of the Rhino with a bunch of skulls and half ass blood splats. He does not how to convert, conversions I have seen elsewhere. Like OMG making Terminators into Oblits, never seen that before. The whole thing makes me think of a movie quote…

Are all men from the future loud-mouthed braggarts?

Then there is posting rules questions with obvious answers. Like this little nugget.

Now if you simply read the last line (pg. 94) about outflanking in the mini dex you will find…

Note that if such units are picked from their army lists together with a dedicated transport, they may outflank with their transport, but if they do so they must move onto the table embarked in it.

What is extra silly is he on the page that clearly says this! I mean come on you cannot take the time to read the whole paragraph that answers your rules quandry. I imagine he is pissed at himself for having cheated people with his little trick.

Then finally we have his most recent video post which has more in common with freshman film students making videos for girlfriends that live in other states, then it has a thing to do with 40k.

I mean really, do I need this emo garage filling up my Internet bandwidth, when it could be settled with a manly hug and a beer? This is a pattern, every time he feels the need to express his feelings it is on to the blog. I think Matt would be better off reading less self-help books and taking 40k a little less seriously. He seems like the type of guy that gets really obsessive about things, only to get drunk and say things he will regret later.

Matt could have the makings of good blog. Since I am so full of suggestions…

  1. Read the 40k Rule Book
  2. Buy a Teleprompter
  3. Stop using Blair Witch as the basis for cinematography
  4. Rename your blog
  5. Stop using Lash
  6. Think before you post
  7. Post before you drink yourself to sleep
  8. Actually finish painting an army before you claim you are the best painter
  9. Stop watching doctor Phil
  10. Check the complexion of your skin

I think with these steps Matt will be on his way to a healthy and rewarding blog.
