BoK Reviews: White Dwarf Issue #102
White Dwarf Issue #102: Fear the Fyreslayers
White Dwarf reviews operate differently than other Blood of Kittens Reviews. The goal with these reviews is to place a value for each issue. The rating system is one to four stars, each star represents $1 in value, to a max of four dollars. The review values are also Warhammer 40k based; Age of Sigmar dedicated issues will still be reviewed, but valued for Warhammer 40k players. It means you could see many low valued issues, with a general Games Workshop hobbyist actually valuing them more. Keep this in mind when deciding if a particular White Dwarf Issue is good for you.
Contents: New Releases
This week is all about Fyreslayers the new Dwarf Berzerker units for Age of Sigmar. We get Vulkite Berzerkers, Auric Heatherguard, Hearthguard Berzerkers, and Auric Runmaster all for a game most people don’t care about, but hey GW is trying. Black Library has a release for Predator, Prey the second novel in the Beast Arises series, along with audio drama for Sigmar. Forge World also has a book, a painting guide Masterclass Volume One. The Dwarves are pretty cool if you like that sort of thing, but the prices are still Sigmar outrageous for what you get.
Contents: Paint Splatter
Here is the return of paint splatter and shows us how to paint the new Dwarves. What is cool about this paint splatter is you get a great formula for both orange and flesh you can use for other models. I especially like the Flaming Hair palette.
Contents: The Lodges of the Fyreslayers
Here we get to learn about the story behind the Fyreslayers and the quest for Ur-Gold, it all reminds me of a missing Ducktales episode. I am sure this all a prelude to the next Battletome, which annoyingly will only focus on just a small faction of the Dwarves, now known as Duardin.
Contents: Warscrolls
If you are an Age of Sigmar fan this is the part where the White Dwarf has some value, you get all the rules for the Fyreslayers shown in the issue.
What is GW saying?
Released Jan. 9th 2016
A bumper White Dwarf announces the arrival of the Fyreslayers, stout duardin berzerkers who worship the lost god Grimnir and battle across the Mortal Realms in search of ur-gold. But why? The answer might surprise you…
We take a first look at this great new range for Warhammer Age of Sigmar with Paint Splatter and warscrolls for all the new releases, plus a look at some stunning Fyreslayers art in Illuminations. This really is the essential, comprehensive introduction to the warrior sons of Grimnir! We’ve also got a look at starting your own Tyranid army in Invasion Swarm and still yet more of the usual madness in The Week in White Dwarf. They’ll soon be rarer than ur-gold, so grab one now.
Contents: Illuminations Fyreslayers
More eye candy for the upcoming Battletome we get new art work showing off the Fyreslayers. It is pretty impressive and many have an epic feel, here are my favorites.
The second one actually looks to give us a sneak peek at a new flying creature coming to Orks down the road.
Contents: Invasion Swarm
Here is our only 40k content and it is pointless marketing material trying to give new players and idea about the how to collect Tyranids. It is crappy fluff with images we have all seen before and is a total waste.
Contents: The Week In
The week in weak information has a few more pages for Dwarf lovers and some stuff you didn’t care about nor ever asked for.
Next Issue Hint: In a Bumper-Size Issue, The Quest for Ur-Gold Begins!
Final Verdict
Issue #102 is another horrifically bad White Dwarf if you are a 40k player. It is only marginally better as an Age of Sigmar issue. Mostly sale driven content, at least players will get an idea on how Dwarves have changed in Age of Sigmar, along with some free rules.
