Blood Angels 7th Edition

Blood Angel Tactical Summary as of 10-25-16

The Blood Angels are one of the founding Space Marine chapters known for their blood thirsty, but noble demeanor. The Blood Angels are cursed by the Black Rage which has given rise to there most iconic unit the Death Company. The Blood Angels have a vast number of tactical unit options, but since the current 2014 release of the Blood Angels codex they have been one of the least competitive armies. The problem had been two-fold, expensive units and Formations & Detachments not keeping up with the times.

Thankfully, this has all changed with the 2016 new rules from the Angel’s Blade Campaign Book. This update has given the Blood Angels two new Detachments and a few very powerful Formations. As long as things don’t change too drastically with 8th edition we should see Blood Angels returning the many battlefields. The Archangel’s Orbital Intervention Force, Golden Host, and the Lucifer Armoured Task Formations being the main reasons.

Angel’s Blade Campaign Book also make already underrated Blood Angels units much more playable. Furioso Dreadnoughts and Death Company are some of the most cost effective units you can find. In the past though they just never had good methods to prove their effectiveness. The Death Company Strike Force and Chapter Ancients Formations really do a good job of providing the extra punch these units need. Chapter Ancients Formation also makes Librarian Dreadnoughts playable as they don’t take up valuable HQs otherwise.

Even with the improvements, Games Workshop limits the Blood Angels, unlike their Space Marine brother they lack any “free units” and expensive units like Stormravens Gunships are still shoehorned into Formations and Detachments that would be better without them. At least now with a Detachment like the Angel’s Blade Strike Force you can get enough Sanguinary Priest to really strengthen other Blood Angel units.

Below you find all the quick reference material you need to build an competitive or fluffy Blood Angel army.

As of 10-25-2016 Blood Angel Detachments are…

  • Combined Arms Detachment
  • Allied Detachment

Special Rules:

Well-timed Blow: Once per battle, at the start of any Blood Angels turn, the Dreadnoughts in this Formation can deliver a Well-timed Blow. When they do so, shoot as if it were the Shooting phase, or Pile In and fight as if it were the Shooting phase, or Pile In and fight as if it were the Fight sub-phase. Different Dreadnoughts can carry out different actions if desired, so some might move, some shoot and some fight. Dreadnoughts that shoot or fight can do so again later in the same turn.
