White Dwarf Issue #115: 30 Years of Space Marines

White Dwarf reviews operate differently than other Blood of Kittens Reviews. The goal with these reviews is to place a value for each issue. The rating system is one to four stars, each star represents $1 in value, to a max of four dollars. The review values are also Warhammer 40k based; Age of Sigmar dedicated issues will still be reviewed, but valued for Warhammer 40k players. It means you could see many low valued issues, where a general Games Workshop hobbyist actually valuing them more. Keep this in mind when deciding if a particular White Dwarf Issue is good for you.

Contents: New Releases

One model new release, but a ton of books makes this White Dwarf packed with new releases. The Imperial Space Marine 2016 leads the way as the model that started it all. It is nice update, keeping most of the features of the original, but using the molding tools of today. It is a collectors item, but one that comes with its own rules, so now you can have one random Space Marine running around? Next we get a set of re-boxings, making it easier to get formally limited edition characters. The best deal is the Space Marine Heroes box which saves you about 40 bucks you would otherwise spend if you got them individually. In addition to models, we get a surprise Angels of Death supplement for Space Marines providing all the limited edition formations; plus new detachments, psychic powers, and relics for the Founding Chapters. The Index Astartes Apocrypha is another book that details the GW history of the Space Marines, including old art and background on how they came to be. We are not done though, the Black Legion and Crimson Slaughter supplement get updates, giving long awaited new life to Chaos Space Marines.

Black Library releases a book by Phil Kelly the Blades of Damocles. Forge World isn’t out done as they we get a look at the amazing Thousand Sons Contemptor Dreadnought, along with Thousand Sons Marine upgrade kits.

Contents: Paint Splatter

In a random edition of paint splatter we get two pages of dry brush tips for Space Marine models.

Contents: The Angels of Death

Here is a little Space Marine history lesson. As someone who loves this sort of thing this is fun way to relive how the game has grown from the 90s to today. The best content is the Power Armour through time section and the model history of Marneus Calgar. If you are Space Marine fan it is worth the price of purchase.

The final page of the White Dwarf  takes the place of useless The Week In section with an equally pointless, go drink your Ovaltine at your local undermanned GW store.

Final Verdict

Issue #115, as a historical document is pretty darn good, it is jammed packed with history of the Space Marines, but if you don’t like Space Marines really steer clear of this issue as it offers nothing else.
